IMPORTANT: SciForums Update - Report All Issues Here

The "likes" count is still there...
"Trophy points" are gone.

And yeah...Gremmie lives (kinda)...Sorry.

And both of those points are very minor considering that LaTeX worked yesterday.

Did it need to be fixed?

$$V = \sum^k_j \alpha^k e_j$$ Crap

I really REALLY cannot understand why members of a science forum are worrying about "likes", "trophies", avatars, embedded videos etc when surely the most basic tool in hard science - LaTex - cannot be implemented.

I had it working last night (after some good advice) {that was meant to be simple paretheses}, and went to bed happy, and now I am not

What n Earth is going on? Seriously, I am curious - who is supposed to be setting up a usable format for a SCIENCE forum?

[Original message deleted.] Which is to say, apparently the Rich Text Editor problems can't be avoided by even unclicking the darn thing as the default editor in Preferences.

C C I actually did see the post you deleted - you implied that this site had {would?} become a sand-pit for bored kids and nothing more

I agree and more- unless someone gets a grip and sorts out the now very simple formatting problems, it will become a desert

I suggested earlier, and I repeat - The Physics Forum sorted it out - those responsible should swallow their pride and seek advice there if they are incapable of doing it alone.

Grrrrr.....

Ah those. They were heavily dependant on likes, so they probably went with it.
I don't know why it was disabled, but I guess they just felt we could do without it. I, for one, am glad it's gone.

There were also 'achievments' as well.

For some reason when you use the tags to make a word bold, when you post it it's bold, but when you go to edit it, the bold tags are missing and the word is bold in the editor.

Strange.

...and the tex that was working earlier is now inop.

Because the new software uses a 'Rich Text' editor, this rich text editor seems to use a WYSIWYG kind of interface, where rather than showing you the tags, it shows you final product. In the old software selecting text and using Ctrl+B would insert the appropriate tags, in the new software it actually bolds it. Sam if you use the button to insert an image while you're editing the post. Rather than showing the IMG tags and the image URL it shows you the actual image.

If you don't like it, the Rich Text editor can be disabled:

Good grief, calm down. Last night Plazma Inferno! installed a package. I have no idea what the package was, however, I know that it disabled at least one feature (which nobofy other me seems to have found anyway) and, as probably happens when you do things like that, probably upset half a dozen other things which now need to be fixed.

Thanks, that did the trick. I like to see the tags.

Ooops, but then I lose everything else. :)

wow trippy
I just "got" your avatar
very funny
lol
Thanks :)

Thanks, Trippy and others!
No problem.

Yup, at this point anyway.

In general - based on my observation it seems that the things that have been broken may have been broken by a change in LaTeX package -
Tex tags were woring, now they're not.
Parentheses seem to work as tex tags.
Text in parentheses gets rendered in the style as text in tex tags used to.

I deleted my original post referencing that as solution of sorts after I noticed a few problems returning even after the RTE was disabled. (Experiment here; fingers crossed.) Apparently everything's working alright again for the time being, though.

Correction: Just in preview. Still getting goofy stuff after it's posted.

Another edit: Absolutely crazy. What's in parenthesis has actually continued to "morph" over several minutes after posting, as I watch.

(this is a test for getting italics and a lack of spacing in parentheses)

curiously, it seemed ok until i went to edit to add the smiley

gee darn

It seems that an experiment has been done using a LaTeX package that renders LaTeX as text rather than images.
The down side of that is that it seems that the tex tags no longer work and parentheses function in their place.

This is why anything you post in parentheses comes out looing (funky) because the text gets rendered as LaTeX text rather than ordinary text. It also seems that it doesn't show up in the client of the poster until the person making the post does something to cause the page to refresh.

As for the order things are getting fixed in, I imagine some fixes are easier (checking or unchecking a box) than others (for example involving compatability issues between modules).
