Permanent /pûr′mə-nənt/ : adjective

> "Lasting or remaining without essential change. Not expected to change in status, condition, or place." As in: "a permanent address; permanent secretary to the president."

> "Continuing in the same state, or without any change that destroys form or character; remaining unaltered or unremoved; abiding; durable; fixed; stable; lasting. "a permanent impression" Similar: abiding, durable, fixed, stable, lasting.

(The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition)

I'm not permanent (cheers ensue). You're not permanent (someone must have hit the >Mute< button).

The Earth isn't permanent. Nor is the Sun. Even the Milky Way galaxy won't be permanent.

What about the visible Universe? Will it be permanent? It seems to have had a beginning. If it wasn't here before that, how certain can we be that it will continue when it wasn't continuing before it began?

What do you think might happen if Time were to suddenly end?

Is this^ Mr. G the same Mr. G below?

I taught Astronomy/Physics/Chemistry at all age levels for almost 30 years. Intelligent, educated, informed is no special criteria. Sheesh.

I've held actual moon rocks in my hands. You're just a minor player on the spectrum of trying to be relevant.
I had to make it through layers of NASA some stuff to be able to get there. What have you actually done?
The half-stick of dynamite kid?

Without time, entropy becomes irrelevant, as there’s no gradient for energy to disperse. The universe might exist in a single, unchanging thermodynamic state. Spacetime itself might unravel, potentially dissolving the universe’s structure into a dimensionless singularity or void. Particles, energy, and consciousness would halt mid-action, with no progression or decay. There would be no "after." Any speculation about consequences becomes moot, as all frameworks for continuity dissolve.

foghorn: yep

It's complex.

Q: That time must exist that we might be able to make sense of all of this. What is the purpose of sense?

I'm not sure it's only to give time purpose.

Part of it is enjoying another Scotch on the rocks.

Purists think that Scotch should never touch ice. Yet, Scotch is mostly water.

If we assume the primary role of sensory systems (sight, hearing, etc.) is survival and adaptation that allow organisms to navigate environments, detect threats, and fulfill needs then that sensory input shapes our perception of time to create a coherent timeline. Without sensory stimuli, time might feel abstract or unanchored giving little coherence to existence, hence it motivates goals, ethics, and relationships.

From that often arises temporal narratives; past experiences, present actions, and future aspirations as we attempt to create meaning to confront time’s inevitability, our immortality.

And, it's obvious you've been partaking heavily, that, or you just can't handle your liquor, maybe take this back up when you're sober.

If it wasn't here before that, how certain can we be that it will continue when it wasn't continuing before it began?
We can't. Indeed, most theories of the universe would involve some kind of "end", or at least changing so much to effectively be an "end" from our point of view. There is no reason to suspect that is likely to happen "soon" on a universal time scale and so is almost certainly irrelevant on a human time scale (and especially an individual human one). As you mentioned, the Earth (or our ability to survive on it) will certainly end and we have a reasonably good idea of that timescale.

What do you think might happen if Time were to suddenly end?
Literally nothing would happen by definition.

Q: Time seems to be Nature's way of insuring that everything doesn't happen all at once, too fast for anything to notice.
Honest Joe: Nature seems to put waterfalls between Salmon and their spawning headwaters.

Q: Sobriety is a relative term, no?

Most people today (not all) have components of their DNA whose purpose is to metabolize Alcohol.

Alcohol has been the major source of potable water for millennia.

Most people who couldn't metabolize alcohol have long since died out having had to drink non-sterile water.

Dissing Scotch earns you a time-out in the corner.

I apologize for ignoring you. Language & understanding can get in the way. I wish I were perfect.

From Google: "How do you determine that time is passing?"

Successive sunrises. People telling me I'am a loser, frequently, repetitively.

"You compare different moments of the position of matter in space, and seeing the difference, you understand that time has passed. If suddenly nothing changes in space, including you yourself, then you will not even understand whether time has passed or not."

I appreciate your take on reality. I don't know that I know. Help is helpful.

I have a sister-in-law from Georgia, a Ph'D in Russian literature from some Moscow university, one of the more interesting people I've known.

Sadly, my adopted family is Argentinian. They won't let me talk to her.

So many people are so f'd up.

I failed you. I apologize.

If time ends, what does it matter?

We won't have to think that posting messages in forums is an actual thing.

No more moderators.

Like the end of the Universe was the requirement.

I really like that non-English speakers are motivated to reply.

I wish more people would participate.

I'm American. I don't dislike you just because you aren't American.

Give me a reason, yeah. Just be you. we're good.

Время существует только для тех, кто умеет сравнивать. Сравнивать и анализировать. Т.е. для тех, кто обладает сознанием. Сознание - ещё одна загадка природы.
