Why LCD TV can not be bigger than plasma TV? I mean the biggest size available! :)

They want you to pay more money for the plasma right now because they can make them both the same sizes.

I want to turn my plasma TV into a plasma weapon. I could then implement my plans for world domination. Ha. Ha Ha. Mwahahahahaha!

plasma TV can, at the moment, get bigger than LCDs without compromising picture, but LCDs are getting better. moreover, plasmas have a better whitest white to blackest black ratio. so they look a bit nicer. I would say plasma is the winner if you want 36+ inches, but LCD would probable win below that.

I've heard that plasmas dull over a few year's use.

the only "flat" CRT is the face of the unit. generally the screens were rounded.. but you can buy them with flat screens now.

regardless though, the principle of operation of a CRT does't allow it to be flat. the horizontal and vertical deflection of the electron beam requires enough space to bend it before it hits the screen. if you were to shorten the distant excessively, the yoke couldn't bend the beam far enough. I'm not sure what the maximum beam deflection / unit distance is, but apparently it makes for a general max deflection of 45 degrees or less.

none of this matters though.. as this thing could perhaps make all our screens go away.

is there such a thing as a flat CRT?

Sony Wegas (as well as many others by other manufactureres) are nearly flat, but the front glass is something like 2" thick to handle the vacuum. And I'm sure there is an actual curve to the front, as wesmorris has informed us of the beam requirements, there would HAVE to be.

the "beam requirememt" I mentioned is a total geusstimate. I mean 90 degrees really, 45 from center up or down. I'd imagine as you bend the beam more is loses focus and diffracts or something.

In a weird analogy, plasmas and LCDs overcome that problem by virtually make the beam emmitter the same size as the screen and able to do a beam per pixel. that way there's no bending to worry about and no reason to bother with a screen, since there's no angle to have to bend through. So the emitter and the screen become one.

maybe that was dumb. I gotta go.

Plasmas can burn in, although they are getting better. Lcds do not burn in, although they can after a long period of time develop "sticky pixels", but they fade away again in about a quater of an hour. Im a traditionalist, i rather like CRT screens, although i have a tft on my pc.
