Pneumonia and renal failure

When you breathe, the air goes into your lungs and then into your blood stream. If you have a major infection in your lungs, the microorganisms can go from there into your blood and then everywhere in your body. This is why you are discouraged from heavy workouts when you have serious lung congestion, as the germs can migrate to the sack around your heart and fill that up with puss, putting pressure on it until it quits beating.

When those germs go all over your body in your blood, they get to your kidneys, Those are supposed to remove stuff like that from your blood, so they give that a shot. If there is way more germs than your kidneys can handle, they get plugged up and fail. While the actual cause of your death is then "renal failure", the true culprit was the "sepsis" (a system wide infection) which in turn was caused by the massive lung infection (pneumonia) that dumped the germs into your blood initially.
