Prison Wages??

I have just learnt that inmates get prison wages? is this right? or is someone just having me on?

if it is right, how much is it? what makes them think they are entitled to money, after they have broken the law? shouldn't they're families be taking them toletries, tabacco, and other things? Why should the goverment pay them, and ultimatly the tax payers?

should they really have the benifits of being inside has we have outside, (the people who haven't broken any laws) why should they get dvd players? and all the comforts of being at home?

They can even have "sex" visits! anyone else see the abserdity in this?
 
Yes, prisons do pay the inmates but very small amounts, about 15 cents an hour and that money goes into commissary accounts never directly to the prisoner.

Conjugal visits help keep prisoners calmer and less riots take place at these institutions. There are restrictions as to who gets those types of visits however but I'm not certain what they are.

Let's say you are 22 and married with no children when you get a 20 years sentence. Why shouldn't you be able to have children when you are still young??? That is not part of your sentence, is it???

but prison is about punishment, if you let them have sex with they're wifes then they are getting the same privalages as people who havent doen anything wrong, can't do the time, dom't do the crime!! it's easy has that!!
 
and besides he wont be there rasing the kids he will be in a cell, so thas not fair on the kids they bring into this world
 
I saw a TV documenrtary about this sort of thing and if I recall only inmates that were keeping out of problems and were short timers were allowed to have such visits. I'm not real certain , its only what I think I recall.

yeah i saw the weird world of louis theroux, but he was in USA and the inmates all had rgiths to certain visits, and it didnt matter what they did, its almost like a reward for being a criminal, oh you killed someone, go and have sex with your wife!!
 
So, most of you seem to think the wife should also be punished for the crimes of her husband. Interesting viewpoint.

They get to do that thing. On the other hand they don't get to do other things. Prisoners get to eat, breathe, socialize, read, write.....
We could add sex
or not.
But they would still be being punished.
At least, I can assure that I would consider time in Sing Sing punishment even if I got conjugal visits. In fact I would avoid such punishment like the plague.

She gets punished regardless. Unless she likes the sex, 5 minute talk thing for a relationship. Of course that might be 5 extra minutes and he might appreciate her conversation more so it could be a step up for some.
And then there are women in prison.
 
This reminds me of the movie Midnight Express.....

I think being thrown in a Turkish Prison would be a little different
than one over here in Canada or the US. Makes ours look like
a fancy Country Club.

I believe it is absurd that prisoners get wages, entertainment, outside-time, sexual (and other) privelages, etc

If we are not going to execute them (which we should), then at least throw them in some rotten cell and be done with them! No need to waste food, water, money, etc, on them.
 
Prisoners in Canadian institutions are paid wages, have conjugal visits and receive quality education. Why woud it not be that way? these are humans who will be released back into society. It's a positive that they can maintain a family structure and leave with an education and a few dollars.

It's not in society's interest to have a broke, uneducated, relationless prisoner tossed back on to the streets. It's a recipe for further problems.
 
Depends on the crime. Not all crimes are equal. Even as a prisoner, a citizen has certain rights. Like a right to bear children.

Also if you don't have any priviledges, you can not be punished by removing them. Prisoners need to go look forward getting something otherwise they could just riot all the time because what can they loose???

Also, if society is protected by removing them, (primary goal) why shouldn't let we do this and that???

Don't toss him on the streets! Criminals are criminals, they deserve shit, and they should get shit.

Don't give them the opportunity to riot. Again, there are only two ways to deal with them

1) throw 'em in and forget about them (no need to waste food and water on scum)

2) OR we can use them for free labor, like digging, etc

True. a sytem of rewards is beneficial for self discipline and the safety of prison staff. Over 99% of incarcerated individuals will be released.

The term "I disagree" to what I had replied to was not an inaccurate use of that term. I think you are one of those people that must resort to calling others "ignorant" if they disagree with you.

Prisoners HAVE rights but they SHOULD NOT; they hurt others, that relinquishes their protection by the law (or, it should)

I think this is a good idea. My dad always tells us back in his day they were put to work. Cleaning up all the garbage on the side of the roads, digging trenches, forestry, etc. Forget about all the fancy gyms they are equipped with they can get their exercise working.

Not to mention how many of these inmates are treated properly and given all these privileges only to be repeat offenders and end up back there again.
