I'm coming up to that age where I'm going to be terrorisng OAP's. Yep, the year of the driving test. If I (and remember, I said if) succed, what car do you reckon I should buy.
I figured that because I'm not excactly vertically challenged, I should invest in a 4x4. But I'm not sure yet, I've got a good 3 months to go, but I'm getting my options sorted out.#
Any advice would be a great help. Anecdotes are welcome

Haha, I'm holding the Official Driver's Handbook right now brushing up for driving lessons (after my G1)!! Anyway, my advise is don't buy a car. The money for insurance is insanely high.

Or - if you must get one; let your parents buy it, and have them put you as a driver of it on their insurance. Much cheaper.

My father is buying it for me.

i must remind you that i'm from the UK, so if anyone says something like Buick, I'll just stare blankly at you, 'cos they are non-exsistant here

Buy an old mg or an old bronco those are cool. My lease is up on my car in November so I am looking to.

Damn you! I can't afford a car, insurance for me (with a clean driving record) on my own would be around $2300 annually, not to mention gas/insurance/fuzzy dice.

Do you really need a 4 x 4? I hope you don't live in the 'burbs....:D

haha

hehe....i guess i listed insurance twice....i don't mean i pay $4600, only *heh* $2300.....

Insurance company: Bend over please.
Me: [dies]

If yer 'ol feller can afford a 4x4 get a Mercedes ML45.

Why not a second hand MX5 or MR2?

A merc. He's not that rich.

I want a second hand 4x4. Nothing fancy. A modest 4x4

you know, the chevy pinto is coming back into style. kids nowadays steal them from their local junkyards, paint em up nice, inject a new suspension/transmission/engine......, and they're ready to roll.

either that or a PT cruiser.

Thor riding a pinto, or a PT cruiser. what a nice image. :)

I've recently driven a couple of the Suzuki 4x4s (Caribiana I think). Cheeky 1.3 pickup type thing.

Good fun but seriously underpowered going up hills & stuff. Not a motorway car but a laugh off road and light with it.

Oh, and I think cheap

:)

I can't praise the new Toyota RAV4 highly enough, it's fantastic to drive and feels great! Around 11K S/H, 14K+ new. I own an automatic with leather interior--smart man!

I heard that Nissan Terranos are good, er, Subaru Foresters? Toyota Colorados? All good 4x4's!

If your budget is under 5K then consider a well looked after(circa1990) MkII Golf GTi 16valve.

If you just wanna pose on a budget then get a S/H Suzuki Vitara Soft Top.

Good luck.

i would say get a mini cooper all the way...but thats just me. i mean if i had the money there are so many cars out there that i would buy. Instead i'll just stay with my '87 Ford Escort that should have died 3 years ago

Thanks for the advice. I think I will get a 4x4. Something meaty but under 5k.

Has anyone noticed that I've been here just over a month and I have trillions of posts. I've got loads. Where are they all. I can't find hardly any of them.

Thor,

I never mentioned Range Rover! For while you're probably able to pick one up cheaply, it will cost you your whole family's arms and legs just to keep it serviced and insured. As for Land Rover products in general, they are great machines but totally unreliable, a bit like Oasis and so typically British!:D

I did notice that about your posts, I thought, 'blimey this guys crazier than Banshee, like, writin' 50 posts a day or whatever', but I think there must be a problem with sciforums counting machine, because my total (posts) doesn't change with each posting, more like every 10, probably British software

BTW yeah I'm a Brit an'all.

What on EARTH do you people do with 4x4's? Take your hand off it, you've never gone anywhere more dangerous than the local back alley which has never been paved... phht.

I just ordered a MINI cooper last month, I CANT WAIT TO GET IT.

you never gave us a budget, that would help a lot (translate the gbp to usd for us american folk too while your at it).

I have been pain stakingly looking at every review and test driving damn near every small car I could find for around 20k USD or under, so right now thats my specialty. As far as 4wd goes I would recommend a subaru 2.5RS (the wrx or sti if you have the money). Or get one of their larger vehicles, very realable, safe and fun!!!

I think SUV's are stupid, but if you really want one the only ones I will recommend is hte bmw X5 (doubt you can afford that) or a JEEP wrangler.

Get a toyota tacoma 4x4, best truck (or 4wd) vehicle for the money.

If I do get a 4x4, I'll be going on rough terrain. Country roads, fields, and dare I say it, B-Roads

get the wrangler, or an old xj5 or xj7 (jeeps). I'm only assuming they exist there, I don't know for sure. They destroy seriously souped up off road vehicles in competition (totally stock), its funny.

We do have Wranglers over here. Some day, I'm gonna get a Hum-Vee or Hummer or whatever you want to call it.
