    TV Alert: The Elegant Universe
Oct 27, 2003 - Tune your television to PBS on Tuesday, October 28 for a two-hour Nova episode called "The Elegant Universe", based on the book of the same name by Brian Green. Followed by the one-hour conclusion on November 4. It'll cover the current theories about the Universe, and should put a lot of complex concepts like "string theory" into a form non-cosmologists might be able to understand. If you don't get PBS in your part of the planet, the entire show will be available online from the PBS website.

    I'll be watching.

P.S. I had a warning on Friday from one reader that pointing your telescope or binoculars at the Sun for too long without a proper filter could damage it, so if you're going to project an image, only do it for a few seconds at a time to protect your equipment. And remember, don't look at the Sun directly - you could permanently damage your eyesight.

    Sounds interesting.

On a side issue, what's all this about:

The final warning is good, but what's the problem with pointing your telescope at the sun for too long? I can't see how it would be damaged.

It depends on what the lenses are made of, how it's focused etc. I guess that 'technically' you could get it how enough to melt the lense... but it should not work with standard binoculars or a thin tube telescope.

The special was very cool. The visuals were excellent. Now I just wish they had one that just focused on M-theory. BTW, I keep hearing that Albert Witten is an amazing mathematical genius. What makes this guy so smart. I find him very interesting.

I watched the whole thing. It was excellent. Very good documentry on general relativity and quantum and how they don't meet on any application. Quantum being on the small atom level and relativity working for the large stars, planets, and galaxy level. They spoke of String Theory as a potential unification theory, but I highly doubt that it has any promises. First off, It needs multi dimension of at least ten and minimum 5 to work and that is making the problem of unification worse, because now will have 10 theories instead of two. It will be interesting to find out how String theory will pass the sour test of black holes that have killed quantum mechanics and general relativity.

I understand that Albert Witten is one of the characters in the serie.

I think that what makes him a genius is beeing some superposition of Albert Einstein and Ed Witten.

I believe that if my name was Ed Einstein (instead of 1100F), I also would have been a smart guy, or even, maybe a genius.

    At least I am half a genius (genius = 160 IQ, half a genius = 80 IQ)
    lol

Did you see the news about 90 days ago about the 12 year old going for his Masters in medicine in Chicago? Over 200 IQ.

So high they say it can't be measured. Need a brain upgrade go to a 12 year old brain surgeon.!!

Not even a teenager yet and he has been cutting up bodies - Whew.

I did notice that they chose to not discuss the purported orbit instabilities claimed by many should gravity be limited to v = c. I also know we have had discussions about Relavistic ways of accounting for that scenario.

I would just liked to have seen it explored and explained.
