well it may not pay....to try and help someone, but it may give us the feeling of being useful. It all depends why and how you help.
It also depends on whether one's reputation allows one's interference to be accepted. In the case of the Middle East, the reputation of the US is heading for an all-time low, resentment is multiplying and as a result, every official American initiative for the forseeable future is cursed.
