Thank you for your feedback, as always. It turns out, funnily enough, that spammers use many different ISPs, including ones used by potentially-legitimate internet forum users.

In principle, one could IP block entire countries from access to this forum quite easily, and that might eliminate a lot of the spam we get. Can you think of any possible downside to such a move?
I'll try really really hard to figure out why entire nation or even wider scope bans could have any downside whatsoever. In the meantime I stumbled on the following articles that may interest you James R and whoever else at SF may have some say in an apparently costly and difficult (or not at all!) upgrade from http to https protocol:

Can you think of any possible downside to such a move?
We might not get to hear from the next amateur scientist Nobel prize winner (will it be "I can show how to travel faster than light" or "I can show evolution is false")?
