    A quote by George Carlin.

    Discuss.

I find some truth to that, since I relate to it.

I think cynics are just lazy people who like to bitch and moan rather than move their butts and do something about the stuff that bothers them. For which I say, Thank God. Since they do less damage that way.

That's an often used phrase in categorizing cynics, another one is that a cynic is a failed romantic. I think its true in a sense since a cynic would have had to believe in something and either have seen it fail in general or in regards to their life. If you never believed in anything then you would be more neutral or allowing for context to create opinion when sizing up some event or situation. Cynicism is often attributed to age where the ideals or beliefs of ones youth have been tempered or obliterated through experience. So yeah I think its fair to say 'inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist'.

Funny you say this.. because you sound somewhat cynical in many of your posts SAM...

Being cynical doesn't mean you stop trying to strive for good.

Some of the most successful idealogues have done great harm. I'm not cynical, I still believe in people. I'm just realist, I don't get disappointed if they don't live up to my expectations.

    -=-

    I'm a realist. A realist is inherently a cynic.
I'm not disappointed when people live down to my expectations. Including those who make absurd assinine assumptions about cynics.

I've seen my idealism go out the window faster than I've seen my cat run.
    And I'm only 17.

    Oh, I don't know, SAM.
Those Americans aren't very cynical by that definition, are they.

One has to wonder if they're doing more damage as idealists than they would if they were cynics, hmm?

Conversly, inside every idealist person, there is a cynical person .

I love Carlin, and completely agree. I feel like if I was a slightly less hopeful person, I'd be a tremendous cynic. Last year, life had a good habit of kicking me in the slats. I also believe if you ride things out, they get better. They are.

So if you believe in someone you won't be dissapointed if they don't live up to your expectations?

If your boyfriend/husband cheats on you you won't be dissapointed?

Sorry, I don't see it~~ an idealist person is not cynical. a dissapointed idealist, is.

Whilst I agree with George Carlin, Cyncism is the easiest and most logical way through life. Not a total cynic, but someone who is secretly cynical, but doesn't try to dampen everyone else's enthusiasm, but remains silent, knowing that in the end, he will be proved right.
