Here's a test from the UK Libertarian party. Find out if they consider you to be libertarian.

    http://lpuk.org/pages/take-the-test.php

I came out 40% on this test.

Personally, I find it annoying that they conflate "liberal" with "libertarian". I do not believe that these are the same thing. I would call myself liberal, but I'm only moderately libertarian.

My problem questions: Do I want to raise taxes on the rich? No I think they are good where they are but I would lower taxes on others and help the poor more with money saved from lower defense spending and lower corporate Welfare. I gave the libertarian answer and decided next time it was a toss up answer the non-libertarian answer.

Other hard question: Do I want Democratic government overthrowing dictatorships? I said no, the Libertarian answer based on my presumption that when Democratic governments overthrow dictatorships it is just to install new dictators more willing to take orders from multi-national corporations and the US president. I have a feeling that the Libertarians meant overthrow dictators to install a genuine democracy which I would be OK with.

I scored a 20% ("Die, Illiberal!") on this test. Having seen the snide comments from each question I got..."wrong"...

I totally agree with the definitions and the first two sentences nailed it (The term liberal is one of the many words in the English language whose meaning has been utterly corrupted. It now means something entirely different to its original historical and philosophical meaning.)

As I took the test, I fully understood the results of each of my answers. I have been saying for years that lefties had bastardized the term liberal. In the sense that the test framed the questions, they were the things that represent an honest to goodness meaning of what it is to be liberal.

That's all I will say, as much as I want to say more.

Your conflating and confusing classical liberalism with liberalism as a whole.

    That test was stupidly designed.

EXAMPLE: "The state should make people change their behaviour to tackle climate change?"

See, questions like this are lameboat questions. Make people change how..? As in, forcibly alter their perceptions and attitudes? Or simply enact laws that require people to adhere to certain practices that alleviate climate change's effects?

For the record, I got 60%. Libertarians however are not liberal. Most de facto libertarian politicians in the USA are wishy washy republicans with a history of lies and scandals on their record and who are masquerading as either liberals or conservatives at any given point in time. Just take a look at Bob Barr. He supports the Patriot Act and he also is credits himself with beginning the war on drugs -- two things that libertarians are supposed to rabidly oppose. Meanwhile, he is the libertarian party's favorite nominee for presidential elections. That party has become more wretched than ever, and trying to disguise themselves under the auspices of a much more well-received term (liberal) doesn't change that.

I think many of the questions are badly worded and I'm not entirely comfortable with that sites implication that if you disagree you must be an arrogant bastard, although I do consider myself to be a libertarian.

Noticing that madant's badge was a wholesome green (90%) and mine the nasty red of nasty evil (20%), I went back and retook the test just to see what would happen if I suddenly became increasingly "illiberal".

    STALINIST/FASCIST ALERT!

I cannot agree with your analysis. I think rather it is those who have conflated the basic idea of liberal progressivism with their idea of progressive fascism & marxism that have conflated the term. In order to create confusion over what it means to be liberal.

Spend some studying the terms look at more than one source; process them and then you will begin to understand my point.

For example actually read sources from all perspectives, I do this regularly. The other night after someone tried to tell me that marxism & socialism are entirely different in their attempt to refute my claim that they are the same; I spent the rest of my evening reading from a marxist website that talked all about how they absolutely are the same thing. I had already known this, but I allow myself to question my prior thoughts. In doing so, I confirmed my former beliefs to synthesize a better belief of the same thing but much more firm.

I remember writing a paper for college that was to show that plea bargains are unconstitutional. I thought myself a fairly strong understanding of the Constitution. I searched high and low, and ultimately could never find anything that confirmed my hypothesis. Naturally, I was left with writing that I could not support that claim. Yes, I got an A on the paper.

I also think that many are finding out that what they thought was liberal and how they identified themselves as such, isn't so.

That is why some are complaining about the results. In short, they aren't who they thought they were.

So I wonder then, what are they really? HMMMM, that is the question.

No the problem is modern liberals have realized while the social aspects were sound the economic didn't ensure the maximum amount of freedom so they adpated while others didn't libertarians.

Having actually put time in as press officer for a local branch of the Liberal (not Libertarian) party many years ago I'd dispute the description.
    Meh, life.

of course not tis not Ayn Rand approved. My suggestion to you is not to base you ideology on the wrintings full of logical fallacies.
Or maybe you just don't like modern liberals and want them to be something else.

I have the problem isn't my lack of understanding of your point its just that I feel its bullshit and hasn't taken account the growth of liberalism beyond classical liberalism.
