its all about the wobble...

It is the polar vortex(low pressure zone around the pole)forming at the tropopause. If strong, it keeps the frigid arctic air up around the pole. If it weakens, then it could break up and form daughter vortices which meander, often bringing cold air into the temperate zones---such an event led to record cold temperatures in iowa this last winter. This one seems to be forming up a tad early-----but it's only strong at the tropopause- (you can choose a lower altitude by clicking on the word earth)--so far.

I like to play in the nullschool website
live, yes
so many options, wind, temp,...etc...etc... you can even see where Co2 readings are high or low based on geography or altitude
great fun, and educational too.

The letter "e" on the keyboard toggles the menu.

Setting height at 850 puts you at "weather height", except directly over mountains.

Commercial jets fly at 250 hPa, +- 50, more or less. So the winds at that height - which you can "predict" by stepping the image through increments of 3 and 24 hours into the future - are more or less what your flight is looking at. https://www.metabunk.org/converting-mb-pressure-to-altitude-and-sites-where-this-is-useful.t5265/

Command +/- zooms and backs
Clicking "O" in the projections sets a good starting size and shape.
I can't figure out what the "Grid" is for.
