I am fairly certain that the majority of game players over the age of 14 no longer generally play Zelda.

Nintendo does have a retro market, Oniw17. But this market can only satisfy people for so long. Specifically when newer games are gaining larger audiences.

thats why they're always behind in technology...they're always so cheap..Sony is losing money with each console because they're not cheap....
Good for Sony! :bugeye:

:p

If its all about substance why not go out and buy an old nintendo? it has great games and gameplay.....
I do HAVE one! ;)

Wii. At first I was skeptical, but when I saw the footage at E3 of the orchestra conducting game and of the Mario game I was like " I WANT!"

im 15 and play zelda, my dad and uncle play zelda final fantasy and we all also play kingdom hearts

the way a game is set up ( graphics) does not matter to me at all

i paly a game for the STORY the as people have mentions laready SUBSTANCE

33 is the -present- age. These are not late 90's figures. Moreover, reviews of video games do not entail sales, specifically sales to the majority market. Note that "Beyond Good and Evil" was critically hailed as one of the finest games of that year, as well as "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time". Both were economic flops.

Riku_124:

Story? What is the last Nintendo game with that? Story is found in the mature, story-driven games, that Sony provides. I.E. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, et cetera, et cetera.

Really, I must say though: The economics of the video game market are fascinating. Bigger than the movie industry. Anyone not interested in them on that level, regardless of age, is a fool.

In the late 90's the average gamer was 28. The article I linked mentions this. That's why the Video game industry is doing so well. With your average gamer being 28-33, they make enough money to buy all the games they want. Unlike the minimum wage earning teen.

"Wasn't it 28 not too long ago?" does not = "it was 28 in 1998". Moreover, a game can be a hit in the kiddie gamer market. Which you will note the "Rated E" TooT was aimed for.

You will note, Ganymede, that your source states:

"The average age of games players rose considerably during the period. In the UK, PC games players tended to the oldest with magazine reader surveys suggesting an average age of 27-31 (similar surveys in the US put US PC gamers at around 32-36 years old). Playstation games players came next with an average age of around 25-20 (console user average ages begin high and tend to fall from there) with Nintendo the youngest at 18-15. We believe this was the result of a number of factors:"

I was quoting Ganymede's source. But when I speak of the huge economic influence, my sources are a smattering of game magazines, internet periodical articles, and news stories on them. I could provide you some, but sufice it to say, they would not amount to the majority of stories that I have read to back up my arguments on the economic impact.

Oh.
I believe you, I was just curious as to where you were getting your info. I thought Nintendo was leading market share, or was equal to Sony, in terms of game related sales.

Roman:

Not in the console world. Overall, though, Nintendo is doing good, as the Gameboy has had nearly 20 years of games, games are still being produced for the GBA, and the DS is a little ahead of the PSP, although both systems are still in their relative infancy. THis is to say, Nintendo's main cash is coming from the handheld world. It's last two consoles - The Gamecube and N64 - have been unmitigated disasters, though. The Playstations have crushed them and the X-Box beat Gamecube.

To give an impression how great Playstation 2 did last generation, according to Wikipedia:

Playstation: 111 million shipped.
Gamecube: 21 million sold.
X-Box: 24 million sold.

This is world wide.

Also:

Playstation 1: 100 million shipped.
N64: 32 millions old.

Whats new generation about it? Nothing. Its a GameCube with a different controller. Another gimmick system made by Nintendo (like Gameboy Advance SP), this is Nintendo's last hope, they haven't shined since N64.

The N64 was more powerful than the PS1. The GameCube was more powerful than the PS2. And another gimmick? I guess that's why the so-called "gimmicky" Nintendo DS (dual screen, touch screen, voice sensing, built-in mic, etc) is outselling the PSP, PS3 -- heck, every single console and handheld system COMBINED over there? It's why the DS is still selling out in minutes in Japan where the lines for new shipments of the DS were longer than the preorder lines for the PS3 and Wii? Check out the sales as of two weeks ago over there, which is similar to how it still is:

At least XBOX360 and PS3 are going forward in technology.....

No they're not, they're using old or existing PC technology. There is nothing new about the 360 or PS3 technology-wise. The 360 and PS3 are actually computers, not consoles, even Microsoft and Sony state that. The only things they bring are updated graphics of their previous console which is updated next-gen, nothing new gen.

From a technological standpoint, Nintendo has always been behind the times. This has crippled their market share. Nintendo was an ecomomic giant in the 80's. It is now in last place.

They have? They invented the classic controller. They invented the analog sticks that Sony and Microsoft added to their controllers. They invented rumble packs before Dual Shock. They invented their wiimote tilt technology that Sony hastily implemented after Nintendo shows everyone the wiimote at E3 when they had their silly silver boomerang controller. Nintendo had the Power Glove with other tilt controls and also had the sports pad that Sony took for Dance Dance Revolution. Nintendo also came up with a dual screen handheld system that uses touch sensing and also voice sensing in games. Nintendo are the ones coming up with all the new ideas whereas Microsoft and Sony either copy Nintendo or use existing PC technology. At least the PS2 and PS3 have the EyeSpy though. ;)

Seriously, consider the reason why Nintendo is failing as a business company in the console market.

When have they failed? When were they failing? They make tons of money. They make profit right off the bat with their consoles. Business success is all about profit, not sales. People tend to think sales because companies usually make profit off their sales, but when Sony, for example, is losing $200-250 per console sold, sales don't mean jack squat. There's a reason why their stocks are plummeting and their electronics division has had negative profits in the billions for the past 5 years having to borrow tons of money from their music and media division. So long as Nintendo continues to make profit, they'll be around. Every generation people say this is Nintendo's last console, heh.

Anyhow, Sony is taking a huge hit with their consoles because they're forcing people to have blu-ray players so that they can win the HD format war which both blu-ray and HD-DVD will fail. There's a reason why the PS3 games with a free blu-ray movie and not a free video game. The PS3 is all about getting blu-ray players out on the market in hopes of people using that format. Sony has already said their toughest competitor isn't Microsoft but rather HD-DVD.

In the late 90's the average gamer was 28. The article I linked mentions this. That's why the Video game industry is doing so well. With your average gamer being 28-33, they make enough money to buy all the games they want. Unlike the minimum wage earning teen.

Yep, totally correct.

"Wasn't it 28 not too long ago?" does not = "it was 28 in 1998".

This is why the age range continues to expand. It used to be 28, but now it extends into the 30's now that gamers are growing older. People who grew up in the last 70's and early 80's when PC gaming and console gaming happened, they still play it to this day. This is why there's still a lot of 40 year olds and even 50 year olds that are gamers.

and the DS is a little ahead of the PSP

Heh, the DS is a bit more than just "a little ahead" of the PSP. You guys are REALLY underestimating these so-called "gimmicky" devices.

To give an impression how great Playstation 2 did last generation, according to Wikipedia:

Playstation: 111 million shipped.
Gamecube: 21 million sold.
X-Box: 24 million sold.

This is world wide.

Also:

N64: 32 millions old.

That's just "shipped", not sold. Sony quit releasing the sales figures for the PSP after getting it's butt handed to them by the DS so now the only info they release about the PSP is "shipped" info as well.

Considering the original NES system was ungodly popular where everyone had one and which revitalized the video game crash of the early 80's bringing console gaming back alive and they only sold 60 million, I find it hard to believe that the Playstations both sold over 100 million. I'd say they only sold around 75 million max, and that's being generous. Sony continues to only release "shipped" information, and they're probably counting replaced PS2s and whatnot in that figure. Tons of people have either bought a 2nd PS2 due to it breaking or have had it sent back and fixed.

There's a reason why companies don't release cold hard data and use ambiguous words such as "shipped" rather than flat out saying "sales". Sony's PR is working like crazy to make themselves out to look good and they have to save their name because right now they are hurting so badly. Their stockholders are pissed at them and their electronics division has had negative sales the past 5 years. Everyone is saying how much the PS3 is going to fail, developers, media, gamers, etc -- it's all about the Wii and 360 right now.

Using ambiguous words for their previous sales is one way to try and make themselves look better. Right now they're riding on their name alone to get them out of this. Sony execs have been quoted as saying that even if the PS3 sucked, people would still buy it for the name, heh. Sony is literally on the verge of not being around much longer as they have EVERYTHING riding on their new blu-ray format and the PS3 ties directly into trying to help make it a dominating format but it's still currently failing to HD-DVD. Either way, both formats will fail and downloable content will take over.

The PS3 is going to bomb; it'll go the way of NEOGEO and 3DO -- expensive consoles that failed and only have a small cult following. The Wii and 360 are going to have the most sales -- the Wii capturing the young gaming market, non-gamer market, and hardcore gamer market who decide to buy both a Wii and 360 for the price of a PS3 while the 360 captures the hardcore videophile market.

Due to the innovativeness, price, and being so much different, the Wii will slightly pull ahead of the 360 due to the hardcore gaming market deciding to buy both consoles while the 360 totally dominates the PS3. Nintendo will also at least double the profit of Microsoft due to making profit from their console from the get-go, having so many first-person titles, and also selling so many accessories such as wiimotes for the non-gamer multiplayer games. The wiimotes are sold out everywhere and are actually harder to find than the console itself, heh.

Neildo:

The N64 was more powerful than the PS1.

But used a cartridge. Which make crap games.

The GameCube was more powerful than the PS2.

But used a crap format and released virtually no games of worth.

And another gimmick? I guess that's why the so-called "gimmicky" Nintendo DS (dual screen, touch screen, voice sensing, built-in mic, etc) is outselling the PSP, PS3 -- heck, every single console and handheld system COMBINED over there?

Yes, people buy handheld game systems. This means nothing in the CONSOLE wars.

shipments of the DS were longer than the preorder lines for the PS3 and Wii? Check out the sales as of two weeks ago over there, which is similar to how it still is:

Hardware
01 - Nintendo DS Lite - 128,621 (5,753,904)
02 - PlayStation 3 - 42,099 (123,738)

Note: Japan. Note: Limited supply of Playstation 3s.

The 360 and PS3 are actually computers, not consoles, even Microsoft and Sony state that. The only things they bring are updated graphics of their previous console which is updated next-gen, nothing new gen.

Cell processor? Massively more powerful than the Wii? Lightyear jumps in computer technology?

They invented their wiimote tilt technology that Sony hastily implemented after Nintendo shows everyone the wiimote at E3 when they had their silly silver boomerang controller.

A far better design, considering one is not reduced to swinging one's controller around like a retarded circus monkey.

Nintendo are the ones coming up with all the new ideas whereas Microsoft and Sony either copy Nintendo or use existing PC technology.

Eyetoy? Headset? Playstation 2.

When have they failed? When were they failing?

They went from dominating to losing. SNES was the dominant system, as was the NES before it. Then they failed miserably against the Playstation and Playstation 2. Nintendo also lost almost its entire base to Sony and Microsoft.

They make tons of money. They make profit right off the bat with their consoles. Business success is all about profit, not sales. People tend to think sales because companies usually make profit off their sales, but when Sony, for example, is losing $200-250 per console sold, sales don't mean jack squat.

Consoles sold = Games sold = Sony is rich. Sony made a great profit off both the Playstation 1 and 2. Nintendo had to sell their consoles for pennies in order to barely get 25 percent of the market.

A tremendously bold and awesome move on the part of Sony. I fully expect to be using Blu-Ray for the next 20 years.

Actually, you will note the article mostly gave a younger crowd in the late 90's and early 2000's. It has only been relatively recently that a huge influx of 20 something players have been mainstream in the console market. PC gamers have always been older, though. Owing to the fact that the PC used to be very adult-focused, rather than kid-focused.

Heh, the DS is a bit more than just "a little ahead" of the PSP. You guys are REALLY underestimating these so-called "gimmicky" devices.

They are a couple million ahead world wide. They barely have 60 percent market share.

That's just "shipped", not sold. Sony quit releasing the sales figures for the PSP after getting it's butt handed to them by the DS so now the only info they release about the PSP is "shipped" info as well.

Do you expect most products on the shelves are going unsold? Absurd. The Playstation is a huge success - basically everyone who plays games has it. It's been Sony's greatest success in a long while.

Considering the original NES system was ungodly popular where everyone had one and which revitalized the video game crash of the early 80's bringing console gaming back alive and they only sold 60 million, I find it hard to believe that the Playstations both sold over 100 million.

The game market was extremely limited to children and young teenagers at the time.

I'd say they only sold around 75 million max, and that's being generous.

I'd put it at around 97 million, easily. World wide.

Sony continues to only release "shipped" information, and they're probably counting replaced PS2s and whatnot in that figure. Tons of people have either bought a 2nd PS2 due to it breaking or have had it sent back and fixed.

Some people had. The problem only affected about a million consoles, last I checked. Moreover, it was owing to improper usage. The instruction manual clearly tells people to keep it well ventilated.

Everyone is saying how much the PS3 is going to fail, developers, media, gamers, etc -- it's all about the Wii and 360 right now.

Actually, few sources, if any at all, claim the Wii will be a success. All signs point, in fact, to it being a failure. The Playstation 3, on the other hand, is expected to increase the Playstation market share. The Wii has and will suffer from the same thing that has destroyed NIntendo in the past: Crap third party games. Paltry online and a kiddie image will do the rest to make sure the Wii maybe makes second place, if they are lucky.

The Wii is all ready being attacked for being last gen in technology. This will increase exponentially as it becomes apparent that if you want to waste your technological bang for your buck, you go Nintendo.

Sony is literally on the verge of not being around much longer as they have EVERYTHING riding on their new blu-ray format and the PS3 ties directly into trying to help make it a dominating format but it's still currently failing to HD-DVD.

In five years, HD-DVD won't exist. The Playstation 3 will make sure of that, when millions upon millions are sold in the US. Just wait till Christmas when a million more Playstation 3's go flying off the shelves.

Your analysis is so far off base it is laughable. You need to truly get a grasp of the economics of electronic gaming.

But used a cartridge. Which make crap games.

Actually, the N-64 had better "quality" games, and better graphics. There was no Playstation 1 game that was better then Golden Eye, or Zelda Ocarina of Time. Nintendo also has the best gaming developer to ever live Shigeru Myamoto.

But used a crap format and released virtually no games of worth.

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, Rogue Squadron. Nintendo went with the small disk format to cut costs. That's why the Gamecube was the most profitable console in the last console war. Sony actually lost money, as did Microsoft.

http://www.cubed3.com/news/4145

A far better design, considering one is not reduced to swinging one's controller around like a retarded circus monkey.

There's no one gaming critic that agrees. All of the mock Sony for stealing Nintendos Idea, and their lack of innovation.

They went from dominating to losing. SNES was the dominant system, as was the NES before it. Then they failed miserably against the Playstation and Playstation 2. Nintendo also lost almost its entire base to Sony and Microsoft.

You're right, both systems sold more, but Nintendo made more money. So in reality, Sony and Microsoft lost.

A tremendously bold and awesome move on the part of Sony. I fully expect to be using Blu-Ray for the next 20 years.

Sony failed miserably on the UMD format, and the Mini Disc format. So based on Sonys History, doesn't look good for Blue Ray, However I hope it succeeds.
They are a couple million ahead world wide. They barely have 60 percent market share

Actually Nintendo has 72%

Actually Analysts revised their statements once the PS3 price was released. But right now Nintendo is blowing them away.
