In the US election cycle it has become apparent Russians are meddling in American politics. They have hacked into the servers of the Democratic National Party (DNC) and stolen emails and other materials that were subsequently published with the intent of damaging the Democratic Party and helping the Republican Party and its presidential nominee, Donald Trump.

It now turns out that wasn't the only Democratic server that was hacked, Hillary Clinton's campaign servers were hacked along with the servers of congressional Democrats. The question is why? And the answer is readily apparent. Russia favors the Republican Party and its presidential nominee. But it goes farther than that, this isn't the only time or even the first time Russia has done similar things.

Russia has been financially sponsoring right wing European parties in the hope of fomenting disunity and political chaos. It's a new very cold war. Out of the chaos, Mother Russia i.e. Mother Putina hopes to weaken NATO so he can invade, occupy and annex the lands of his neighbors has he has done but without repercussions. This is a very dangerous game Mother Putina is playing. The Western response should be quick and severe.

This Russian alliance with Western right wing parties is more than a little odd and more than a little dangerous. I never thought I would see the day when the American right wing would be allied with Mother Russia. The Republican nominee a few days ago plead with Mother Russia to hack his opponents server and publish her emails. I have never seen anything more bizarre in American politics.

So will Russia's strategy of subverting Western democracy work and what should Western countries do in response? I say we destroy a few Russian power plants or lock them out of the international payments systems. What should Western countries do in response?
