Why is it that its considered good and essential that violence in video games becomes more and more realistic and graphic and even in 3D so you can almost feel the blood splatter off you as you hack into another random target and yet sex (which is responsible for ALL of us being here and is necessary and good) is considered to be evil and wrong.

As an example I predict at least ONE person will write (at least until they read this) "only pervs want more simulated sex", "if you want more porn just look at the internet"

I have been reading the new regulations for the R rated games and again its all about more and more violence being allowed. Sure simulated sex is now allowed subject to conditions (and Im not talking about the fact that sexual violence is banned) but if it happens to be a REAL penis or vagina (or god forbid, REAL sex) its automatically banned. It makes no sense

At a guess, I would hazard that it ties into the conservative ethics (largely derived from religion) that sex is a private act that is only sanctioned by marriage.

Despite what is actually transpiring, the media that controls our societal programming by means of what information is broadcast sees no reason to go there.

Violence on the other hand, particularly righteous vengeance, is largely acceptable and sanctioned by the same book that one swears an oath upon in a court of law.

Justifiable violence is conditioned into our society that we do not question when the need arises for our nation to embark upon such actions, IMO.

Sorry wrong, IVF has only existed for x years, previous to x years all reproduction was sexual. Ie you might be here from IVF but your parents and grandparents and great grandparents .... all are here only because they have sex

    Because:

Violence is hard to get in real life and is generally BAD.

Sex is something most everyone should have in life and is generally GOOD.

So... Video games are an escape from reality. We need our violence fix from them, we shouldn't need our sex fix from them.

Also I don't want myself influences sexually from a bunch of video game makers. Porn industry has 20 somethings thinking that fucking like lower primates is the ultimate...video games would be even worse. Also why kids shouldn't get their first impressions from it.

However surly thats your choice, just like my preference is for RPGs not FPS and to be perfectly honest I would find it quite fun and amusing if my character and her wife got some in the game, otherwise what is the point of getting married (*cough cough* Fable *cough). The same with PB in the sims, she loves to make them sleep with EVERYONE and she also bought the playboy game. Not everyone wants to shoot zombies, Russians and muslims, not everyone actually finds that entertaining.

The question isn't "would you buy it?", its "why is one banned\restricted higher than the other?"

Ok so you just mentioned several games that have sex.

You want it depicted in XXX pixilated form. You play mass effect? They just about did that. Any further than what mass effect does and you distract from the STORY (which is what RPG are SUPPOSED to be about). Just like why few mainstream movies will get too explicit unless it is gratifying for the director or actually advances the STORY somehow.

I really don't think it is out of modesty. They have had XXX games for more than 20 years. Game makes want to sell at walmart(M rating even kills them).

Err, no, I just don't think it should be implied or blurred while the guy i sniped in the last FPS i played had his brains splattered all over the wall in highdef AND slow motion to show how perfect my head shot was. How does that "Advance the story"

This is my problem, even if there were some teens jacking off to the sims what does it matter? better people get inspiration for SEX, than school shootings

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/29/school-shooter-north-american-tour-2012_n_840641.html (yes I'm aware that the game was pulled, but it was created and released in the first place)

Edit to add: apparently it wasn't pulled, it was pulled by the server but not the producer who is still releasing it

    Marketplaces: Money and Mind

There's this video game, see. And in it, there are all sorts of sublime sex jokes. For instance, you can get yourself a hooker, bang her, then beat her to death with a pink double-ender, and get your money back. Or cut her throat. Or shoot her in the head. It's awful. But it's fascinating; everyone I know who played the game did that at least a few times. You can also pimp whores, and if you successfully sell, protect, and collect from ten of them, the game unlocks a new feature. Now you can get a whore, and she will pay you for sex. And you can still kill her afterward and pick up an extra five bucks at least, if not more.

And there is a radio host who is a world-traveling child molester. It's absolutely fucking hilarious. One of the women you date is a complete nympho perv. You can take her out, wreck cars and run people down, pick up a bite to eat, and have insanely crazy sex. The plot requires you go through a mission in which a psycho woman rapes your character. The plot requires you to wear a gimp suit and bang the daylights out of a croupier; you even beat up the gimp. Which is the point in the game when you must finally recognize the possibility of beating people to death with a dildo. And you do. Because it is hilarious. You walk down the street with a twenty-four inch magenta monster in your hand, just pick someone at random, and beat the holy living f@ck out of them with it.

And you know, a newer chapter of the game got rid of the hookers and upgraded the strip club scenes. You get two girls in g-strings on the third lap dance.

    Eh ... I don't know, you know?

I'd rather run around in a gimp suit, or a tuxedo, beating people to death with a dildo. It's a lot funnier. There's more to it than just watching clubbing in the canyon.

One of the things that happens in the presence of customary prohibitions is that people find ways to work around them. If people need more cock in their video games, that's fine with me. No, really, that's all it is. More cock.

The semi-regular lay in the later chapter of the game; I'm not sure the cutscenes would be that much improved by seeing the undersized instrument objectified by the flaccid dialogue.

So, sure, I don't see a reason why not. After all, the results of our neurotic obsession with getting around the rules are hit and miss. And as soon as the software companies overturn the laws against distributing pornography to minors, they'll get right on the cock deficit. Because the video game designers aren't leaving their underage market behind. That's the meat market where you compete to bring customers into the long-term franchise, such as a Halo or GTA. And we need not kid ourselves that when the teenagers move into the most valuable market sector, age 18-49, that they haven't already played something like GTA. Putting cock into those games will inevitably run up against the question of distributing pornography to minors. Parents who blithely buy their child a controversial game might not pay much attention to the rantings of the usual suspects. But once word gets out that they've crossed to virtual pornography, many of those parents will clamp down. The immediate sales loss isn't so worrisome; rather, it's the loss of access to a long-term customer.

Inevitably, the question of cocking up video games is a business consideration. 'Tis better to have the bird in the hand than hope to capture it tomorrow.

As it is, they are capturing significant audiences simply finding ways around the rules. It makes them look clever. And it occasionally makes for some good scriptwriting. The software companies won't attempt more blatant pornography without believing they have a market reason to.

And as with money, so with ideas: You can certainly criticize the customary standards affecting the reservation of such sexual behavior to limited view, but societies in general aren't going to undertake such changes without some apparent demand in the marketplace of ideas that offers some profit for accommodating.

Is there any time when sex would be pivotal to a storyline or add to a game at all? Unless the game was purely a sex game, which I'm sure there are many out there.

I think it's mostly the parents. Parents worry more about sex because they (probably correctly) believe that their kids are more likely to have sex than to get into a high-octane ultra-fight with helicopters and flamethrowers. This is probably coupled to the wide-spread belief that video games are "for kids," which STILL hasn't gone away...

fair enough about the helicopters but what about the school shooting game in the US? or say Street racer (GTA, GT etc), we have a large problem in Australia with "hoons". And to be honest, Our kids are SUPPOSED to have sex at some stage, otherwise the human race ends right here (sure it would take a few years but without reproduction a species isn't viable)

Could I just point out ADULTS are supposed to have sex at some stage. Not kids. Most of the extreme shooting games are aimed at an adult audience, and are very obviously detached from reality. I doubt sex in the games is any problem, but why have it?

Sorry there was a word missing out of that post, it was supposed to read "OUR kids are supposed to have sex at some stage"

Sex doesn't splatter evil on the back-walls. Oh no laddie. You need real big firepower for that...
Evil-smacking gets the green light and the good housekeeping seal of approval. Even the better that the evil is all-in-the-mind--what a better way to practice exploiting it's weaknesses, and protecting one's back--but in the virtual arena.

Maybe it's all marketing? WTH do I know?
I just want to kill simulated people, it allows me to let off frustration harmlessly.

There are a stupid amount of games with sex scenes or where you can get the character to have sex with people like milk maids or prostitues and have been for years (since the 90's). Hell, even Atari had a very sexually explicit game in the 80's, where the objective was, well, I cannot really explain it as if I did, I would be banned for posting pornography [Warning, explicit description of oral sex in link].

From a strictly catholic standpoint using the withdrawal method, it can do.
