Whats in sleep gas, the stuff that comes out when they throw the "knockout grenades"? I've been reading about the Moscow theater incident and they used sleep gas/ knockout grenades on the terrorists, and i have no clue what is in the gas. I searched around google, found nothing.

    So whats in it?

    Thanks

i think this gas was exactly the kind of stuff that Bush wants Saddam Hussein not to develop.. maybe a "lighter" version or something, but powerful enough to have almost all the hostages hospitalized..

Based on survivor's descriptions of the gas' effects and characteristics, it was most likely 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate or "BZ". Several governments are known to have played around with BZ in labs, but as far as I know this is the first time anyone has used it in the 'real world'. It's very powerful stuff - about 0.5 mg is enough to knock a person out.

I read a news report describing the gas as having a ‘bitter’ smell; that wouldn’t fit with normal anesthetics. Although I suppose the report could have simply been wrong.

i guess with the reputation of the Russian government, everything stated about the gas could be wrong..

i can't believe so many got killed because of it.

I do not think it could has been any of the usual gas anesthetics used in hospitals. Those being nitrous oxide, desflurane, isofluran and halothane. You'd need VAST and HUGE ammounts of these gases to put someone to sleep, in a theater. And they're not permanent, it's unheard of someone dying just from gas, on the operating table. Once the gas is turned off, patients recover really quickly.

I have no idea what the gas was/is. But i like to believe that it was an accident, and that Putin didn't intentionally kill his own countrymen.

it was probably a calculated risk. still, too many lives were lost.

YOu also consider the contition most of the people were in. no food, little water, lots of stress, for two days. When people get in that condition, you have to be careful. On the other hand, the terrorists were most likely in better condition, so the gas had to be strong enough to affect them.

according to a Dutch website the stuff that was used was fentanyl, an opiate that in some countries was used as an aenesthetic..

    So i've heard

I had some of the stuff when i had nasal surgery

Quite potent stuff, the dosage is in micrograms (millionths of a gram), and its ~40x as strong as morphine.

It COULD be weaponized i suppose. The media said it "was a form of fentanyl" so if properly modified...sure, i guess it could have been used.

Atleast we know they died a peaceful death (high)
