The coronavirus response seems somewhat suspicious.

    Your reading and writing skills?

Seriously, you could try paying attention: Just saying the virus "is not acting Naturally" and is "mutating way to fast" doesn't really do much. Moreover, given the content of the Cyranoski excerpt, your unsourced disagreement lacks any general basis.

And on that point, it is true, the idea that anyone would stake their life on the petulant, uninformed say-so of an habitual conspiracist crackpot would, indeed, be very, very stupid. And while there is some value in the joke about Darwin and letting such stupid people select out, it's not just about them; they are also harming and even killing other people. And such stupidity that costs lives in that way is a circumstance the human species ought not afford.

Which, in turn, only reinforces the question: Where is that citation, River?

It took me a while to think of a response but,
I am reminded of that famous poem by R. Kipling "IF" and the first line in particular:

"If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs ......, "

This war on mis-information and conspiracy theories etc is all about a world attempting to manage it's collective paranoia and strive for level headed-ness, dealing with facts, supported by rational science and not allowing our own fear and concerns to overwhelm our ability to find sound solutions. As observed around the globe we sometimes fail terribly (thinking Trump etc)

After all, fear is probably a hell of lot more contagious than any virus might be.

It isn't easy even for the most rational of us and wild speculations involving cover ups etc is not helping at all.

There are literally 10's of thousands of highly qualified virologists around the globe working flat out on this Covid problem and to suggest a cover up is even possible, is quite fanciful.
Conspiracy theories always involve a cover up...and obviously the more people involved the less success there is in keeping a secret.

So, is it just too much to ask that you pay attention to the post↗ you respond↗ to?

Here, let's put the statements side by side:

    • Cyranoski (qtd. in #155): "Coronaviruses have a special trick that gives them a deadly dynamism: they frequently recombine, swapping chunks of their RNA with other coronaviruses. Typically, this is a meaningless trading of like parts between like viruses. But when two distant coronavirus relatives end up in the same cell, recombination can lead to formidable versions that infect new cell types and jump to other species."

    • River (#156): "This virus , coronavirus , is not acting Naturally . Its mutating way to fast."

Yes, people around here are very familiar with the part where you just happen to somehow fail to see what you're baselessly contradicting.

And apparently I have to post it again, and even write a new work-cited note for it because it's just too much to ask that your crackpottery pay any attention to the world around it, especially those parts it otherwise pretends to engage. You know, because the best you can come up with in the moment is screwing up↗.

Seriously, why do you put people through it? Do you think you're being intelligent? Do you think you're so fucking smart you just don't need to bother? You want to argue, then go for it, but skipping out, screwing your reading comprehension, and then whining in confusion just doesn't cut it. And since today's dose of crackpottery is actually kind of dangerous, the question presses: Why put people through it?

It's straightforward, River: You claim the virus "is not acting Naturally", and that it is "mutating way to fast"; support that claim.

Used to be practice to give antibiotics if have virus infection NOT NOT NOT for the virus but as PROPHYLACTIC treatment against POSSIBLE bacterial infection

Not used so much now unless patient has poor other underlying issues

Some doctors did give way to patients who were forceful in wanting something, who frequently did not complete the course of antibiotics leading to the resistant strains of bacteria we now have

How so? Are you under the impression that "Covid-19" and "coronavirus" are the same thing? Coronavirus refers to a large family of viruses of which Covid-19 is a single member. Fortunately, most coronaviruses only produce mild to moderate symptoms, but those like SARS, MERS and Covid-19 are more severe. Since the quote refers to all coronaviruses, this means that Covid-19 is behaving perfectly normal for a coronavirus.

That's how viruses act. Naturally. They mutate. That's why you need a new flu vaccine every year. That's why this virus, once not dangerous to humans, is now dangerous to humans.

Mutation is not the exception in virology. It's the rule.

California Republican's COVID death mocked by pro-vaxxers on social media

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ca...ly-ernby-vaccine-mandates-mocked-social-media

So stupid. She paid the price and obviously knows nothing of the mockery taking place

Also has more than a dollop of stupidity about mocking the dead and does nothing to assist encouraging people to get vaccinated

Note it states in the article she was vaccinated, denied by her husband, so the anti-vaccers are trying to gain traction through her death

BOTH SIDES - give it a rest. No, much more than a rest, CEASE all such stupid activity and do not restart

    Agreed. But her followers do.

And if a few of her supporters notice her death due to this, and think "geez - I believed her about the vaxx being evil but now she's dead! Maybe she was wrong" then a few lives could be saved. That's a good thing.

Could it have been handled with more compassion? Absolutely. And I applaud the many people who said things like "I feel bad for your loss. Get vaccinated all" and "I'm sorry for your loss, and TY for clarifying her unvaccinated status. Too bad you couldn't persuade her to take it.. May her memory be a blessing. Stay Safe youself!"

But should everyone CEASE as you say? Absolutely not. People need to see exactly what happens to anti-vaxxers in reality; that stark reality might punch through the blinders of misinformation that is covering the eyes of so many.

My cease aimed at those who are LYING for their cause

Anti-vaccers stated Betty White state she died from booster

Also state Kelly Ernby was vaccinated ie died from the vaccine to counter
    NOT from being unvaccinated

As before, the vaccinated mocking the dead does nothing to assist encouraging people to get vaccinated and in poor (vulgar) taste

Posting compassion from either side fine

ONLY compassion - no follow up remarks about learning lessons etc

    Coffee needed

Well, that's what led to her death.

If you jump out of a plane without a parachute, you're probably going to die. To be sure, it will be the impact that kills you, not "not having a parachute." But the parachute would probably have prevented that death. If that did happen to a guy who regularly preached about how parachutes were evil and you don't need them, it would be good to get the information out there to his followers that he was actually wrong.
    Compassion plus learning.

850,000 Americans are dead from this. That's a pretty big deal. If you can stop even a few of those by having people learn, it's worth it.

I don't think you are following

YES that is what lead to her death. But but but the anti-vaccers ARE CLAIMING SHE WAS VACCINATED AND THAT LEAD TO HER DEATH ie LYING FOR THEIR CAUSE
    NO

    Don't send mixed messages

I'm sorry for your loss (compassion) STOP
adding we should see about getting you vaccinated, or some such (person hears - no you are not, you are just trying to get me to have the jab)

After a few days is the moment to begin the learning process. Give people time to settle before trying to educate

People in turmoil are not the best people to try to educate

Can anyone confirm if she was ever hospitalized?

This is the only thing I can find regarding her medical condition leading up to death.

"Kelly Ernby died on January 4, 2022, as a result of COVID-19 complications. She told her friends that she had Covid just a week before she died. When she died, she was at home, gardening."
