It was a January 27, 1982 and a tiny piece in the NY Times talked about "rumors" that 500 Honduran women and children has been massacred in the tiny village of EL MOZOTE in SE Honduras by the US funded CONTRAS, a rag tag army of the remmants of Anastasio Samoza's national Guardmen who operated like "MURDER, INC." for pay throughout Central America. John Negroponte (*Wow, our spanking new ambassador to Iraq!) was working around the clock to cover up these murders so as not to embarrass the Reagan administration's funding of the right wing killer governments of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, including the murderous CONTRA'S. The Reagan administration denied such massacre had occurred and things died down until the TRUTH COMMISSION investigation several years later sent forensic scientests to EL MOSOTE to investigate the scene. There they uncovered the horrific scene of what had been a brutal wholesale massacre of "Campesino" civilians. There they found women, children and even infants with gaping US made M-16 bullet holes through their skulls, machete cuts in tender children's rib and pelvic bones, with mothers still craddling their infant children as they died in a fullisade of machine gun fire. In the end Ronald Wilson Reagan (The Teflon president) managed to wriggle himself from under this massacre, with a little help from the righties in Washington (as he also succeeded in wriggling himself from under the fault of 241 US Marines being massacred on his watch by a truck bomb in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982). I guess today 'The Gipper" continues to pay for his crimes as president of the United States, existing as basically a vegetable with no recollections of his checkered past.
