Why does being under something mean that you know it? Looking for the answer got me as far as "Old English" but no explanation.

In Greek, another Indo-European language, ka-ta-la-venis' means "you understand." Ka'-ta means "towards." Ka'-to means down and could be related to it. Have no idea what "lavenis" means. Tried other European languages for "understanding" but don't have the skill or knowledge to know if "down" is a part of their word for the meaning.

Any help?
