There are nearly 10,000 members. Did I miss the sign out the front saying FREE BEER!

This must be the biggest science forum on the net or pretty close to it. Anyone know? I suppose its because you cover so many areas of science but other similar boards exist and are practically dead. You have a gazillion categories which all get a few daily posts.

Nonsense. I find the nonsense here very useful nonsense. Whenever I get into trouble elsewhere on the net and need copious quantities of nonsensical nonsense to combat a more informed debater, I just post here and get armed with enough nonsense to mire a super carrier. I would rather run through hell wearing gasoline soaked pyjamas than live without this place. It baffles me how it became so successful but I'm glad its here. The responses are lightning quick.

But 3/4 of those 10,000 people probably never post.

The fact that this board is quite old helps too. Most boards are very new and with the invision board software being included free with web hosting packages these days boards are popping up everywhere...most with little to no substance. This site has drifted from its purpose but it still gives a lot for nothing where as other boards are either too specific and focused on one subject, too strict or completely lax on moderation and totoally deviod of anything useful or interesting.

This place is well kept, respects freedom of speech but also realizes that with freedom of speech comes responsibility of exercising discretion and it has a collection of individuals which give excellent insights into any subject. The moderation here is ounce for ounce the best I have seen so far and the fact that in most instances the users here are self moderating.

Despite what many will tell you science still is the main draw of this place but with more social areas of the site getting the most attention (Free thoughts, Religion, WE&P) it causes and eskewed view of the site for older and newer members.

I find that to be the reason I am still here and I know shit about shit.

The free weekly porn helps keep me here too....w00t...porn for all.

I have been to many sites, and this one is the most aesthetically pleasing one. It reminds me of an Ikea store on the net. Sure you may have the occasional troll, or flamers, but the majority are good posters with points. I think this site is full of controversial threads that question the status quo, (which is usually wrong). That is the greatest assets of this site, great minds do think alike.

indeed. I would go as far as to say that the number of active users is propably less than 25% of the 10K figure.

A lot of these posters are signed on for software support of Porfiry's software. They do not make it to this part of the site.

Most of them are search engine spiders. Google has this site indexed pretty well.

They aren't. The site comes up in searches when users search for different science subjects. The words match...I found the site this way and many others also.

I got here searching about superstring theory about 3 years ago I think, took me the best part of a year reading past posts I never regularly posted till I'd read heaps of the past posts, heaps of information there saved me having to ask questions when some of the info was already there, this site has enough to keep anyone who wants to read reading
