What I would expect in mind never came true.

What I had expected in mind never came true.

I would appreciate it very much, if somebody could express the difference between these?

    Many thanks

"Expect in mind" is wrong. It's simply "what I would expect" or "what I had expected."

You can say "What I had in mind never came true."

Since using "expect" in the conditional mode ("would expect") refers to the present or the future, you must not put "come" in the past tense.

Past tense: What I expected never came true.

Present tense: What I expect never comes true.

Conditional: What I would expect will probably never come true. (You have to insert "probably" because you don't have the ability to see the future, and you might be wrong.)
