The Holy Land was given to the Jewish people on the condition that they observe the Torah and its commandments. When they failed to do this, their sovereignty over the land was taken from them, and they went into exile. From that time, we are prohibited by the Torah with a very grave prohibition to establish a Jewish independent sovereignty in the Holy Land or anywhere throughout the world. The Torah wasn't even written as a defining document until the diaspora. It is a compilation of Jewish customs, oral tradition, and biblical interpretation. The bible is what Jews follow. The Jews are native to Judea, they always had their own land until the Romans kicked them out of Jerusalem and destroyed the temple. They were a people long before the Torah. That's totally incorrect. Since the Romans took over, certain groups of Jews tried to rebel and regain sovereignty. They were supressed by Roman troops, and in many cases massacred (600,000 in one case). Jews have always revered the institution of the temple, which was replaced with other traditions, but never forgotten.
It was never 'given' to anyone. The word Zion is derived from the Hebrew 'Siyon' and is merely the name of a Jebusite stronghold - taken by force by David's armies.
