Congratulations America - you got the president you deserve

Can we assume you are looking forward to it?

Probably. He posts shit like this:
Did (Trump) affect your day to day life last time?
He regularly parrots racist tropes. He has repeatedly stated that his primary concern is debt and the economy, and there's nothing to suggest that he has any other concerns.

So it would make sense.

Often, a tariff will be placed on a foreign competitor like the tariff placed on Chinese electric cars.
Which will increase the price to the consumer. How does that help? The other country will also do the same. How is that beneficial?

You already assume a lot so why stop now?
The only people looking forward to mass deportation are the brain dead morons who voted for Trump. That should answer your question sufficiently and now you only need to find out who here voted for Trump.

The idea behind a tariff is to stop people from buying cheaper products from other countries so that one may buy local instead. It's supposed to benefit American companies sales. Taxes are the other animal.

It doesn't benefit the consumer. It also doesn't benefit a US exporter when the other country does the same.

On tariffs, the problem is that - if I'm middle or working class - when my washing machine dies, I won't wait five years, washing everything by hand, while we wait for US factories to gear up, find parts supply chains unconnected to China, and start producing enough washing machines that supply meets demand and I can get off the waiting list. Instead, I will pay the outrageous price for a Chinese washer now, and thus experience the inflationary impact of the trade tariff. In essence, the US importer will let ME pay that tariff by adding hundreds of dollars to the washer I purchase.

So tariffs only work when there is a domestic industry that's all set up to double their widget output immediately and thanks to union busting and their paying really low wages/benefits are able to offer a lower-priced widget of equal quality. Something of a Pyrrhic victory, really.

Exactly.

And I will add the following scenario:

Right now you can get a new washing machine from an overseas supplier for $400. This is cheaper than the cheapest US made GE version, around $700.

Let's say that tariffs double prices on imports. Now that imported machine costs $800. GE will not lower the price of their machines; instead, they will increase them to $799. That way you still save a dollar and will go with them over the import.

"But at least the money stays in the US!" GE is now owned by Haier, a Chinese company.

Could just get a Whirlpool or Speed Queen, both made in the US. ;)

I'm speculating here, but I think that this fixation on tariffs pushes Trumpian fascism further into totalitarian territory, as per Arendt's definition, as opposed to plain authoritarianism. Well, that along with the fear-mongering and everything else.

My prediction:

Trump will impose tariffs
Prices will skyrocket
Trump will blame China for causing inflation
US companies will start building more stuff
Trump will offer some sort of rebate to "help people deal with China's economic terrorism"
His economic assistance will be the centerpiece of republican campaigning for the next election cycle

Yeah, and it's kind of ingenious really, at least insofar as grifting goes. That's what's scary: They really know how to "win" on the surface stuff, for people who are disinclined to dive deep. And, as Bob Odenkirk famously said, "People just don't have a lot of time."

We'll see.Didn't his tariffs fizzle out a bit last time?

But yes your last part sounds feasible.

If he hasn't gone into that pestilent night by 2028 do you think it would be a centerpiece for his own reelection or just the left over hangers on?
