I think with the allegations/scandals swirling around him, Gaetz is just a bad choice. I’ve always thought that optics matter with these appointments.

He was handed over 400 million dollars sometime in the late 1970s--in today's economy, that would be roughly 1.6 billion dollars. He is estimated to be "worth" far less than that sum. That takes a staggering level of idiocy and incompetence.

As far as being a "celebrity", which for him is being on tv? I think I could get on tv pretty easily if someone handed e a billion dollars. I've been on tv, in fact, and I come from poverty--though not the sort of tv that reaches a wide audience, and not that I would care anyway. If I were handed even a fraction of that sum, I could easily reach a huge audience if that were my aim.

They are also an excellent means for testing loyalty--will the rest of the GOP embrace these idiots as Trump has ordained? Another classic fascistic move.

Probably those figures don't include the contributions of PACs and the like.

That was the main thing that had me optimistic.(lots of small donations and seeming enthusiasm )

Think Trump will try to hand over to someone else I don't think he can (or would want to) run again as he would need much more than a simple majority as well as an obvious reason that he is any good at anything except getting elected.

I still hope he gets put in prison at the end of this stint (or if he has to retire)

"Zealots working for nada" sounds good to me.

Of course not everyone can afford to work for nothing so that could possibly be unfair but I would be much happier if money could be taken out of the equation as much as possible.

In 2016 Trump got lots of small donations and this time it was Harris.

That was good.

It is the large donations that are undemocratic and manipulative even if they can be counter productive.

That said I would contribute to a gofundme with the aim of persuading Trump and his brood to take a long jump off a short pier.

Even the Presidency?

Surely if someone has ideas that are convincing they could run .

I think in the UK they have to put up a deposit and if they get something like 5% of the vote it is returned.

Apparently, there was about $15 billion of dark money from oligarchs that went towards Trumps campaign, the final tally has yet to come in.

Trump completely squandered the almost half billion dollars his dad gave him. He had multiple bankruptcies and was almost broke, but the one thing that saved him was "The Apprentice". If not for the money he made from that, we wouldn't be seeing him in the white house.

The term "independent candidate" as used in the US, is one who isn't aligned with an established political party. They're assumed to be poorly funded campaigns compared with the major parties.
