I think drug use is as wrong as speeding. It's bad for you, but I don't believe in victimless crimes. You have a right to do whatever you want to your body.

But, they're not victims either. If you do it to yourself, you're no victim. You're just an idiot.

Morality, like behavior, dies with the brain that outlined it. Is illegal drug use immoral? Is it maladaptive? Nature answers these questions brutaly and without quarter. Is there a precedent in the animal world of controlling the subjective feeling of well being with foreign substances? I have not researched the area, but I would guess yes. I occasionally smoke marijuana, and I can honestly say that I do not feel particularly malevolent. People who use methamphetemine might have different results. So I would say that by grouping all illegal drugs under one umbrella where morality is concerned does not address the issue in its entirety. Itm seems to me that the question in its most general sense is really asking if there is a difference be illegality and immorality.

Then you are very lucky. Not only did all of my friends morals change, some

committed suicide because of their drug dependency. It you like playing

Russian Roulette with your life then just keep on using those illegal types of

drugs.

But if you are young and stupid as many teenagers are do you think they

should die just because they experimented with drugs? They shouldn't have

to die but they do because they aren't old enough to know any better. To

say they have a right to die when they haven't even started to live is a

very disturbing way to think.

Speeders (in cars) are not risking just their own lives.
But I agree with your post in general.
 
Illegal drug use has a far greater impact than just getting you stoned.

Whom did you buy it from? If you trace the supply carefully you'll often find criminal gangs in the middle. They grow/process the substances, and use the profits to fund criminal activities. Not just coke, but even marijuana often has a serious violent crime aspect to it. Hell, the same's often true of prostitution and DVD/VHS pirating.

Why do you think that illegal narcotics often cluster around more violent crimes? Because the sale of drugs is used to fund the criminal activity and gang politics.

What about all those kids who wouldn't have become addicted, but instead go to jail for possession and have their lives ruined that way? Is that better?

Our prisons are overflowing with people convicted of drug crimes, and criminals find the selling of drugs to be a great way to finance their criminal enterprises.

Prohibition does not work. We tried it with alcohol and should have learned our lesson. But, apparently, we didn't.

No, not at all. I do not follow the law because its the law, I follow the law because I agree with it. If I don't agree with it I try to change it. I feel a sane, responsible person has the right to do whatever he wants with his own body. I do not, however, support drugs that are extremely addictive. The addiction takes away the ability to have a choice, therefore intruding on a person's rights.

hence the hypocrisy of waging a "war on drugs". It will never stop drug use in america--that's impossible. Instead, this government-funded "war" simply gives criminal and terrorist organizations a market to sell their illegal wares.
 
Although I HAVE heard horror stories about the war on drugs, I do not see how fighting criminal activity would encourage the activity. Could you please elaborate, RoyLennigan?

Its very simple, actually, which makes me wonder why the government hasn't realized this yet. (oh I'm sure a few have, but a few don't count).

Because the government makes it illegal, it also makes it worth more. Since it is worth more, then people will do nearly anything to get it here so they can sell it and make a bundle of dough. This breeds crime like nobody's business.

If all illegal drugs were legalized, it would get rid of a very large chunk of the black market---a market tied, in some cases, directly to terrorist organizations. So, in a sense, the war on drugs is funding the terrorists who we are also at war with.

The fact that we are doing a horrible job at this war on drugs makes little difference. It only means that the criminals aren't as smart or savvy. Because no matter how hard it gets, there will always be a demand. And wherever there is a demand, there is supply.

Exactly. If drugs were legalized it would put a lot of criminals out of business. Even the hard drugs like heroin could be legalized by prescription (get diagnosed as an adict and get your prescription quality heroin at the local pharmacy.)

When you consider that we can't even keep illegal drugs out of prisons, the futility of the war on drugs becomes obvious.

Do you follow the chains of supplies in relation to legal products?
If so you will find companies that are doing things that are immoral?
Do you think that because the product is legal you are therefore acting morally when you purchase it?
 
Things are only immoral when they harm someone other than yourself. And I mean actual harm, not just your boyfriend/girlfriend being worried about you because you won't stop raping your nervous system with narcotics.
 
I view the usage of drugs as an aid to unseating the consciousness mind and moving it to somewhere its not so used to, giving rise to new experiences and ways of thinking. Yaki indians use peyote to experince a oness with nature, I use it to aid meditation. Without drugs it would be much harder to view the wiring beneath the circuit board!
