Nasa-Andrea Rossi cold fusion = cheap energy for all.

For those keeping up with news, you may know that Andrea Rossi has developed a E-Cat cold fusion device that can make all of our energy problems vanish.

This technology is currently in production, and is very real. One tabletop model could power your home or car.

Can you imagine buying a cold fusion electric car, that runs off a power generator(s) as opposed to a battery. This would mean bigger and badder electric cars could be built, and battery life would not be an issue.

Gas stations would vanish, and might only exist at mechanic shops.

I did start a thread about this technology, however am more interested in the philosophy of it. How will this affect our society? How would portable power plants affect travel? Cars/planes/space. How would portable power be used for good? Portable desalination units and coldfusion reactors in coastal households? How would governments charge for it without risking black market units? Would other green technologies like windmills collapse? Would we need power lines? Oil Companies? How would middle east react to 600 000 000 less cars being driven by gas everyday?

Cars could be sold with a lifetime worth of energy on board, although even if it started with a few months worth of energy at a time it would still be great.

please assume for the sake of the philosophy that such a device is real. This is a philosophy thread so please pretend it is possible, and what effects it may have on society.

A few observations here that directly contradict what you are presenting:

First, this is NOT proven technology - calling it that is a serious error;

Secondly, it is NOT in production. There are two demonstration units under construction - nothing more. So that claim is also a serious error;

Third, this is the same guy that had a U.S. government contract to produce some high-efficiency solar panels. However, NONE of his panels produced the amount of power he claimed AND many of them weren't nearly as good as the ordinary ones already in use. To put that another way, ALL of his claims for superior panels were TOTALLY BOGUS - an outright LIE !!! He had NOT developed any such technology!

Not only that, he operates through a number of shell companies ( a typical fraudster's trick) and at least one of them appears to exist only on paper.

So, also contrary to what YOU claim here, I most certainly am NOT too lazy to research this stuff - and deeply, at that.

Therefore, all of your rather silly "what-ifs" that you ask about are nothing more than pipe dreams at this point and not worth even one moment's worth of serious consideration.

I actually DO hope that I'm wrong, of course, because if it is real the consequences would be amazing. But I'm not holding my breath for a single second while waiting for this joker to prove himself...

Assuming such technology is possible, then just reading through Asimov's Foundation series, particularly the first collection, will give an idea of what nuclear power from a battery sized source would be like.

Of course, it remains science fiction until one is demonstrated. It should be as simple as demonstrating a regular car battery works. Plus it in, turn it on.

This is a very real and new science! Please research before commenting about it being fake or a hoax! It is already in production.

The problem is that it isn't available to anyone, just because he has a production of something doesn't mean it is actually being sold. I do not know of any source that is using this device as yet.

About your calculations: to get thermal energy from our reactors you do not need to make electric power, you have heat as primary source. Therefore the cost of the heat is less than 1/3 of cent of Euro per thermal kWh. The cost of electric power will be three times higher, for the efficiency limits of the Carnot Cycle.

This is a Philosophy thread, and would like to hear at least one unique idea that the impact of Portable power generation. It is also my understanding that this technology is licensed for distribution through "Defkalion", and that you can purchase it. Some patents pending.

Industrialization

The technology is currently in its final stages of becoming an industrialized and commercially viable prototype. This forms the basis for a broad range of products under the commercial name Hyperion. The current range of products produces surplus energy from 6 to 30 times more heat than energy consumed during its operation. Licensing of all Hyperion products is in progress. A fully functioning 1MW heat producing reactor will be inaugurated in Q4 of 2011.

Inauguration

The 1MW Hyperion will be inaugurated in Q4 of 2011 with its production phase to commence in Q1 of 2012. This first 1MW reactor will be the first large scale unit based on multiples of the smaller Hyperion models in array. It will be used to partially cover the energy needs of the factory. It shall also be used as a show case unit.

I did ask in the opening thread that we assumed for the sake of the thread that portable power was a possibility, and was interested in how it would affect society.

Philosophically speaking, this product would clash with the philosophy of oil companies which is to maximise profits and minimize competition. If it ever makes it to the production stage, it will interesting to see what maneuvres are used to limit its impact.

Philosophically speaking...
What method did you use for:If NASA (or Andrea Rossi) has cheap energy then all have cheap energy.
Some kind of induction? But this contradicts the Logical Fallacies nr....oh, nevermind, these haven't been numbered.
Or this thread does not belong to philosophy?
