Science stories of the week

Was it time for your sleeping pill?
Funny ha ha although it infrequently happened when I was nursing

Apparently in today's addicted to "a pill for everything people" doctors are wary about giving out sleeping medication

This is me in my after shower relaxing position

I put the pillows at foot of bed
Bring head of bed almost vertical and lay back
:) Freaks nurses out :)

Last nights weird dream

Was in a dilapidated house seemingly paying rent to share a room with 3 other males

In the room we were assigned were 4 mattresses with sheets and blankets

Nothing else. I did check another room

Nothing in the room except a unusual feature built into a wall. About knee high was a recessed male urinal. I had passed a toilet on the way to this other room so only guessing this was for a person who was to lazy to use the toilet in the hallway

The other part involved another character and myself after another character

We boxed in his car, one other side in our cars, all cars res, but he accelerated and left long scratches in all 3 cars

:)

Dream of the moment was a afternoon dream

I was piloting one of those back pack helicopters. There was a whole fleet of fixed wing overhead

In the water were a few craft making their way to a person floating vertical due to the life vest he was wearing

I went down to water surface level came up behind the floater put my feet under his armpits and lifted him a little higher in the water and towed him to the nearest boat

Not very exciting but I wonder where it came from

:)

My outside a/c unit was in need of repair this summer. I noticed that when it was shut down for a few hours, the temp in the house increased five degrees in a short amount of time, like maybe less than two hours? When the a/c was repaired, it took three hours to bring the temp on the digital panel back down five degrees.

What’s kind of weird, if you think about it, is that going one way is much harder than going the other way. Making stuff warm isn’t a problem. Just about anything you do will cause something to increase in temperature, even if you don’t want it to. But making stuff cold is trickier.

I should know this, but when your a/c is malfunctioning, you lose all common sense. :rolleye:

When you live in Florida. When you live in Seattle...it's just another day. :)

Regarding your house, the sun is heating up your house and the a/c is cooling it off. Which is more powerful, the sun or your a/c? :)

I think the energy required to cool something off is less than the energy required to heat something. If I'm wrong, I'm sure that will soon be pointed out...:)

If you live in a colder climate trying to heat your home during the dead of winter (as compared to cooling your home during the summer), that would be true but if you live in a warm climate, it takes less time for the inside of your home to heat up (the a/c simply being off on a 90 degree F day), as opposed to the time it takes to cool it back down. The article explains.

Think it would be incorrect

Insert something about the conservation of energy here

The air-conditioning is only cooling, (mainly the air in the room) when it starts up

Gradually the inner walls cool but fighting against the inner walls cooling are the already heated outer walls

:)

Entropy results in cooling naturally doesn't it?

Keep a few things in mind:
1] any heating or cooling measurements are relative to ambient air temp.
2] the sun heats by radiation, which does not depend on ambient air temp.

We are not talking just entropy though

In physics and chemistry, the law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant; it is said to be conserved over time

Wikipedia

The Universe is a isolated system with pockets of high and low energy but within its isolated state no energy can be added or removed - just temporarily moved around ie we cook the room down we must heat up another part of the Universe by an equivalent amount

:)

Increase in entropy involves the spreading out of heat energy, which implies cooling of hotter parts and warming of cooler ones.

What an AC unit or a fridge does is to oppose this tendency by pumping heat, artificially, against the temperature gradient. This requires the input of mechanical work, usually supplied electrically.

The heat output from the hot side is the sum of the heat extracted from the cold side plus the input mechanical work energy.

Back to the dreams,I assume that every character in the dream is myself.

Is that a commonly held idea ,or just me?

(So you would also be the person in the water ,even if less -or perhaps more consequentially. The dream doesn't make narrative sense for that ,amongst other reasons)

Yea, I believe that’s common as well as “seeing” familiar people you know, family or friends, etc…but in my dreams, they’re either attractive or unattractive “versions” of people I know. Apparently, I’m quite shallow in my dreams. ~ lol

That is a theory proposed by some dream psychologists, yes. I think it may have some validity.
I wonder if it is a related question as to whether we can be considered, to a degree as the "author" of the depictions in our dreams or whether the dreams are merely some kind of a chaotic regurgitating of our conscious thought processes over the preceding periods.

If our sense of self has any kind of input into the dreams then it might insert itself into any one of the salient depictions that crop up.

Actually ,I think I carry that idea over into my waking consciousness and imagine I imbue all the people I have close or distant dealings with with a little of my own identity

I colonize their psychic space ,as ut were.

When my a/c was shut off for several hours, the house temp increased much quicker (five degrees in less than two hours) and when it was repaired and began working properly again, it took three+ hours to cool it down five degrees. So, it takes longer to cool something, than to heat something up. It would take far less time to boil one cup of water than to freeze it, for example. I don’t know why I find this so strange.

Did seem like I was anyone else but the back pack helicopter pilot

Last night was another dozzy

I'm going to write it in notes and copy paste here little later

:)
Did you write that wrong?
You didn't mean to write "Didn't seem like I was anyone else but the back pack helicopter pilot" did you?

Maybe we can only be one character at a time but this could shift around during the same dream.

I wonder if we have different levels of consciousness in dreams.

You know, can dreams have their own unconscious?(like Russian dolls)

Best dreams I had was coming round from general anaesthetic (have forgotten them of course)
