Smoking bans: a CONSERVATIVE idea?

Yes I think you're right. It's more in line with the thinking of the Christian Right than traditional conservatism. I also think there is quite a bit of class warfare behind the initiative, at least where I am from. Snobbery fuels a lot of the interest in the ban - at least as much as a legitimate concern for the public health.

and yes i have been in a restraunt a LOT of times before i began working there. NO smoking has NEVER been popular in RESTRAUNTS (bars yes)

as far as your thing about the bar trade its only illegal to smoke in a place that is serving FOOD. you CAN still smoke in a bar\nightclub

its also legal to smoke on outdoor tables

but to be honest who really wants to smoke WHILE they are eating?
not very many people
it hasnt hurt clubs. HAIRYS is still raking it in. So are other places i have been to and are friendly with the staff at
