One person presses one button by mistake - OK mistakes happen

What happens when this particular button is pressed?

An alert goes out to warn those in Hawaii
Emergency Alert
BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII.
SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER
THIS IS NOT A DRILL

What !!!!!!!

Then to make it worse the alert really was not the result of ONE person

A second person had it seems, on the news now, had to confirm

It gets worse. When it was realised this was NOT happening

THERE WAS NO IN BUILT METHOD TO SEND OUT A AUTOMATED CANCELLATION MESSAGE :?

The sky is falling yet again...so who was selling hard hats?

I find it hard to believe this could not be turned around in a matter of minutes.

When computers ask you "you sure you want to turn me off?" and my phone ask "are you sure you want to delete this file?" they don't have a process which says - after the button to send out the "incoming missiles" message is pressed "are you sure you want to send out this message?"

Then even after confirmation the 5 metre LED screen lights up displaying said message in big red flashing letters, a revolving red light and a background Whoop Whoop noise with loud voice overlay countdown "Message will be sent in 10...9...8...7...6...5....4...3...2...1....sent"

One can only speculate but I bet it was not a simple mistake.
The chatter now will be about the NK threat which may have been the desired result if it was not a mistake. As I said it seems like the sky is falling event.
Probably someone is setting up to sell a better system or funding is up for review.
Even if the system broke down after the message was sent one could think "they" could have got on face book or twitter or called the tv and radio stations.... Anyways I bet the NK thing will escalate in the next couple of days or something that this mistake was designed to pave the way for.

Thinking more about it one senerio could be... There was a rocket on its way but it was intercepted some distance away and at that stage it was decided to say it was a mistake because not to do so could cause a stock market colapse.

hold up. no, it's not but imagination is often 'not' imagination. if we imagine it, then there is some kernel of truth or fact somewhere if you know to distinguish the forest from the trees or to not throw the baby out with the bathwater or how to use it.

imagination is a requirement to formulate concepts/frameworks to test out ideas and theories or even know how things connect. without that it's impossible to do. without imagination, one cannot even begin to construct or build anything either. if you are in a forest and want to build a house, that is imaginary because it literally does not exist (except in your head) but that concept (imagination) is necessary and the first step in order to even begin to find out if it's even possible to do or if it exists or can exist.

otherwise, without imagination, speculation, and conjecture, everything remains as it is because you never go further than what is already there or known.

The way I heard it, is that it only took one person to do it. The command did have the 'Are you sure you want to do this?' confirmation thing (like deleting a file) on that one person's computer. He/she apparently punched in 'yes' without paying attention. (Maybe he/she was talking to somebody at the time.)

The proposal to have two people confirm the command seems to be a new idea floated since yesterday.

Yeah, that was dumb. They say that they are going to fix that too.

Another thing they need to look at is giving people a better idea of what to do if an attack is real.

The civil defense advice to lay down flat in interior windowless rooms sounds like good advice, provided a nuclear detonation is sufficiently far away. Many buildings will remain standing while their windows and doors are blown out. Anyone exposed to the explosion outside would get serious flash-burns, so you would want to avoid that.

The people in Honolulu who got in bathtubs with mattresses atop the tub seemed to have had the right idea, since that would probably deflect smaller flying debris.

But if you are right under a nuclear explosion, there's not much you can do.
 
Explanation: Someone was supposed to push a test button, but pushed the alarm button instead. All parties involved are trying to work out a system to avoid it happening again, as well as being able to rapidly cancel if it happens again by mistake. 38 minumte gap is far too long.
