Which musical instrument do you think is the most beautiful?
I don't mean the looks, but the sound that can be created by it and how it influences your psyche.

My favourite is the violin. Whether wild gypsy dances or Vivaldi or Brahms my soul travels on the strings of violins.

Based on looks alone i would say this:

I know your not asking for appearc=nce but it is best sounding to me too.

ofcourse this is all personal opinion, but these are my top instruments for beauty.

mandolin,
various lutes,
harp,
yangqin,
various huqins,

i think classical oriental music is beautiful and very relaxing, if not that then hardcore hip hop beats.

peace.

Well because i play the flute i guess the most beautiful instrument is the .........FLute. But i also like the harp and the piano..=]]

Kind of depends on performance context, maybe.

Excluding electronics - which messes with the definition of what the actual instrument is:

Coming out of a full orchestra: French Horn.

Actually playing the thing, right next to your own ears: Viola

In a small room, solid performer and fine instrument: guitar, steel string, fingerpicked, open tuned and slid.

Across an open meadow and small lake in the morning: tie, bagpipes and carillon.

harmonicas.. they are so southing and relaxing...

... im being sarcastic by the way lol

but seriously.. id have to say either violins or electric guitar :)

my first thought is the harp followed closely by the violin.

now, if we are talking about the range of sounds then the electric guitar wins, hands down. in my opinion nothing even approaches the complexity of sounds that can be created by this instrument. it's only contender is the synthesizer.

Both fall short in manipulation of attack/decay and fine volume control. Few can match even ordinary wood or metal resonators, for tone.

Aspects of musical performance critically important to me, as it happens.

And in the beauty department, the electric guitar is fretted - piano or "classically" tuned, rather than harmonically true - a serious undermining of beauty (thank you JS Bach).

I have heard a harmonically tuned piano - La Monte Young, I think - and that can be simply lovely.

The electric guitar doesn't really have that much range at all - it's all in the various electronic devices to alter the sound - which really makes it not much different than a synth, just played a different way.
