Ahhh Punk Rock

Its because punk changes with every punker. Its different than a lot of genres, as it cant be explained or defined. Its based purely off emotion and individualism

That's not unique to punk though, I'd say any music worth listening to is based on emotion (and individualism to some degree)

Maybe it's late, and I'm just tired...But, what's your point Quad?

Are you just saying you prefer Metal to Punk?

Well, I do, but the point was more that that video is the most hilarious instance of the metal/punk rivalry that I have ever encountered. The whole documentary it's taken from is solid gold, really...

Patti Smith. Some of her three-chord numbskull songs like "Ask the Angels" may have been punky, but then you've got stuff like "Poppies," which could have been on a Beatles album.

My impression is that she gets classed as punk because she was influential and active in the early scene - a lot of punk etymology has as much to do with social and ideological affinity as actual musical similarity. Although she does get credited with inspiring the three-chord numbskullery that became synonymous with punk rock.

Talking Heads. Public Image Limited. White Stripes

Those are all New Wave bands, which sometimes gets confused for punk as there was not a clear distinction in how those terms should apply in the early days (and so some lingering confusion even today as to which is which). I wouldn't call any of them "punk" with a straight face, although I'm sure there are people who do so...

The Clash. This I really don't get. Acceptably decent singing, fairly sophisticated compositions and good musicianship. Why is this punk?

You've got the question backwards: The Clash is punk essentially by definition. You should be asking why later bands that don't sound much like The Clash are considered punk. The Clash is as definitive as The Sex Pistols or any other punk band.

Green Day. I confess that I still haven't heard anything off of "Dookie," but if a guy can write nice straight-up melodic songs with unobjectionable lyrics like "When September Comes" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," what makes him a punk?

Green Day was always something of a "pop punk" band, although still poorly produced and independent (and novel) enough to count as punk up until Dookie broke them into the mass market. The later stuff seems to be a lot more pop than punk, but then that's been the fate of the entire pop punk movement anyway. I'd still take them over Blink 182 or whatever crap is on the radio nowadays though...

I'd highly recommend Dead Kennedys, and Rise Against but I'm not sure you'd quite call them punk. Though if we're going to discuss classification then technically I'm loathed to call anything modern "punk" as it's more seen as an era than a genre, so we're probably talking "post-punk" bands.
As for "pop-punk", I don't like Greenday much, but Blink were quite fun, and at a stretch people seem to include bands like Paramore, Flyleaf, Pretty Reckless. I guess it depends what classification you'd rather stretch.

Green Day is NOT punk...But, I love the Dead Kennedy's..Very much Old School punk.

The others you mentioned...As you said, "fun" Not punk though..

See my list in post #2...Those bands are truly punk...Of course, I left a few good bands out.

Agreed to a point. I wouldn't consider anything new to be punk as music has moved on from that era to post-punk, pop-punk, hardcore etc.
They're all subgenres of the original, and Greenday are generally classed as pop-punk as far as I know.

Often classed as pop-punk. Yes, it's effectively a weak immitation of the original, and was clearly made to bridge the gap between the two classifications. Don't be fooled by the punk addition to the tag, they're not really what you'd consider punk - but they aren't quite pop either. ;)

Pretty much agreed, I tend to think of the Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys and other bands of that era.

I think we are pretty much in agreement then..

Yep. I do rather love pop-punk and post-punk though. Just not Greenday, no idea why.

Green Day was the band that brought me into Punk, and i still love them with a passion. 21st Century Breakdown was a huge let down (besides East Jesus Nowhere, great song) but i wouldnt call anything past Kerplunk! punk and maybe Insomniac. But most of their shit is either Alternative or pop-punk (a genre that i never really understood, because you have bands like Green Day and The Offspring put with Paramore o_O)
I love Green Day, but im praying Tim Armstrong kicks Billie Joe in the ass before their next record to remind them where they come from.

Billie Joe on Green Days album they're working on:
..."go back to the basics. We set up all our old gear and de graded our recording equipment. We started playing stuff from 21st century and said "this sounds like shit." I think were getting our punk edge back. I think were getting pissed again and noticing we got too rapped up in our studio and cash. So were gonna break out the drugs and boozes and try to return to more punk sounds. Not like MCR. They just did some old punk covers and said "nah nah" a lot. We really want to mix American Idiot, and Kerplunk!. I dont know, we'll see. Its early..... I think we had a lot of emotional shit we wanted to get out. And so we got it out. Now we want to spike our hair, break shit, smoke whatever we want, and stay up for three days at a time on cocaine driven rants."

american idiot is there best album
