Things that irritate.

Alright, I'm in ....

Look, I try to be good about it. I try not to poke after typos and spelling errors, for we all know I'm prone to them, too. But a couple of things lately have just gotten to me.

* First: cut out the double- and triple- negatives. Every once in a while they slip in, we all do this. But the consistency with which I have to stop and wonder what the poster is saying, assume between the possibilities, and so forth ... Please? A little help here?

* Second: The name is Timothy McVeigh. Alright? M-C-V-E-I-G-H. Most spelling errors I try to understand, but the name has been plastered across magazines and newspapers and television screens for a long, long time now. People don't even know who it is they want to kill!

I'm pretty sure that no member of Fleetwood Mac was involved in the Oklahoma City bombing.

Furthermore, I'm having difficulty writing a double-negative, mocking or not. At the moment, I can't seem to do it.

Really. Please. For Penemue's gift!

I will continue to work through as many typos and so forth as possible; I like to think I've been good about it for a long time. But "You've missed the point" and "You don't understand" are becoming more frequent than they've ever been before, and I don't want that to arise from a failure to count the number of (extraneous) negating terms in a sentence.

And damn it! If you wish a man so ill as to wish him dead, know his goddamn name!

Longtime listener, first time caller ... okay? That's what's irritating me lately. Thank you all. I return you to your peaceful day.

(Oh, and re: Fargo--though it doesn't upset me in the least ... I had always thought the word is written "eh?" As an interesting side note, my Singaporean roommate tacked onto the end of nearly every English sentence, "Lah." As in: "Going out for a drink, lah. Wanna come?" If you want to get really Scandanavian-American (Fargo), try on, "Ya, sure, you betcha," and, "Don'tcha know?")

As a Brit living in the USA I often became irritated at American spellings and pronunciations, now I find that most of them make much more sense that the British versions.

Some examples –

Color Colour
Center Centre
Neighbor Neighbour

I now say Schedule as in School, whereas the Brits will say Shedule as in Sheep, but still spell it Schedule.

There’s a lot more, but you get the idea.

Anyway, Cris... It's my understanding that there is a varied dialect within the boundries of the little isle. Even there, with BBS and all, many folks live under the influence of their micro cultures. Ain't that so? i would think that you have been exposed to many deviations at home.

By the way, what does "shagging" mean?

Ok, ok, ok... I'm sitting here holding one of my socks by the ends, working vigorously to relieve a serious fungus itch between my toes, and I'm thinking to myself, "Man, that feels good now, but it's gonna burn once I stop." But to be sure, my mind is also pondering this whole issue concerning word enunciation.

The irritation seems irrational as long as the receiver can derive meaning from the word, despite the preferred pronuciation. For my own pleasure, I often use the non-word "unass." An irritable frenzy is what I get from this small infraction when I let it slip from my lips near my wife. I don't see the issue, however. It should be obvious to her what meaning is implied. Yet rather than take it as offered, it is battered with a hardbound Webster and slammed into the shadows of grunts.

I dunno, words evolve. How can we stop a process that is as old as language.

Welp, I've done it now. I'm off to get some bandaids. And yes, they burn!

Did you know that here in the USA the pavement is the roadway and where pedestrians walk is the sidewalk. So when you mention pavement (British for sidewalk) the Americans will think of the road.

I honestly forget which comedian it was that eventually nailed this one down, but hasn't anyone who has ever driven into an American city wonder why it is we park in our driveways and drive on parkways?

I know this thread seems to have died, but I can't resist a chance to complain. My main irritant occurs at concerts, held in bars. I attend a lot of jazz concerts in an area that is not known for having jazz fans. Those that attend the concerts are mostly there to drink, which is fine, except that they find ways to completely detract from the show. At a recent show it was mostly funk, but the band decided to slow it down and do slow laid back shit. Those around found it necessary to yell and scream and blather on about worthless shit. The little things that were being done on stage were completely lost in this loud talking about nothing.

I guess this is just example of the one large thing that irritates me. When peoples actions effect others. Do whatever the hell you want up too the point were it infringes on other people. There are plently of places to get drunk, why do it at a place where you are ruining another persons enjoyment of a concert.

One of the most loathsome inventions of mankind -

The Leaf Blower.

The excruciating noise has the ability to cause deafness to any innocent bystander within a 1/3 mile while the operator wears heavy duty ear protectors.

These attrocious devices cause more irritation to residential commnunities than any other noise making device, including lawn mowers, which are the second most annoying domestic devices created by modern technology.
